Why it matters

Why Bani and Sarthal Meadow is worth your time

Bani and Sarthal show a side of Kathua district that most visitors never expect: cool forest valleys, meadows and shrines far from the plains. The area is also a base for trekkers heading toward Bhaderwah and Chamba.

For travellers with time, it is an opportunity to see the Pir Panjal fringe from the Jammu side. It also reminds you how varied Kathua district is, from hot Shivalik plains at about 393 m to meadows at 7,000 ft.

How to experience it

Bani sits in a glaciated valley along the Sewa river, at about 4,200 ft, with a climate of cold winters and moist summers. It is usually reached by a long hill drive from Kathua via Billawar and Basohli country, so leave early and confirm the route and its condition before you set out.

From Bani, short excursions include Banjal, known for wildflowers, Chandel, with orchards and a spring, and Panyalag, with waterfalls and forest. Sarthal, about 20 km away, is a meadow at about 7,000 ft that stays snow-covered for around six months and connects toward Bhaderwah and Himachal Pradesh.

Accommodation is thin: the district lists only sarais at the Dhoula Wali Mata shrine, not hotels, so contact local hosts or the administration before you travel. Carry cash, warm clothes and medicines, and keep a buffer day for weather. Pilgrims visit the Jodia Di Mata shrine, especially during Navratri.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm road status and your stay before leaving
  • Carry cash, medicines and warm clothes
  • Allow a buffer day for weather
  • Do not plan it as a rushed day trip
  • Ask locally about shrine visits during Navratri
