The first town on the Jammu side of the Ravi: Shivalik foothills, a ruined fort above the Ujh and a gateway to Basohli's hill country.

Kathua is a district headquarters town of about 59,866 people (2011) at roughly 393 m in the Shivalik foothills, on NH 44 between Pathankot and Jammu. Dogri is the main language, and the town is usually a few degrees cooler than Jammu, with hot summers, cold winter nights and heavy rain in July and August.

For most travellers it is a place passed through, but the surroundings reward a day or two. The Jasrota Wildlife Sanctuary and the ruined Jasrota Fort sit beside the Ujh river just off the highway, with birds, quiet tracks and long views. Old Shiva and goddess shrines such as Airwan and Nagri lie a short drive away near Parole.

Further afield the district climbs into the hills. Basohli, on the Ravi, gave its name to a famous school of miniature painting, and Bani and Sarthal offer cool forest valleys and a snow meadow. Those are long trips, best planned as overnights, with advance checks on roads and accommodation.

Kathua suits unhurried travellers, families on a road trip between Punjab and Jammu, and anyone who likes small heritage and nature stops more than headline sights.

Food to try in Kathua

Food and restaurants

Kathua's food is Dogra and Punjabi in spirit: dal, rajma, kadhi, madra (yoghurt-based chickpeas) in season, rotis and rice, with sweet halwa at temples. Dhabas on NH 44 serve hearty Punjabi plates, and in the town centre you will find simple vegetarian restaurants and sweet shops. Specific restaurant names are not covered here; ask your hotel for a current recommendation.

Carry bottled water and be careful with street food in the monsoon.

Shopping in Kathua

Shopping

Kathua is not a shopping destination in itself. Markets in the town centre sell everyday goods, textiles and sweets. Basohli miniature paintings carry a GI tag, but originals are mostly in museums; if you want a souvenir, ask local craft sellers and look for clear information on whether a work is original or a reproduction.

Carry cash, as digital payment acceptance can vary outside the town.

One District One Product

Basohli painting

Basohli miniature paintings carry a Geographical Indication tag and come from the Basohli school of Pahari art. Ask local craft sellers whether a piece is original or a reproduction, since the finest historic works are held in museums.

Choose without overthinking

Which Kathua experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Jasrota sanctuary or Jasrota Fort first?

Go to the sanctuary first if you want birds, since early morning is best. Do the fort later, when the light is better for views, and treat each as a separate access check.

Parole shrines or a hill trip to Basohli?

Parole shrines are short and easy for any energy level. Basohli is a full day on winding roads, worth it for painting and hill-town atmosphere.

Stay in Kathua or in Jammu?

Kathua keeps you close to Jasrota and Parole with simpler lodgings. Jammu has more choice and sights, and Kathua works as a long day trip from there.
