Before you go

Kathua with elderly parents: what to know

  • Do Jasrota and the Parole shrines early, before the heat, and rest after lunch.
  • Choose a hotel on NH 44 or in the town with lift access if mobility is limited.
  • Hill trips to Basohli, Bani and Sarthal are long and winding; hire a driver and plan an overnight, not a rushed day.
  • Carry regular medicines and cash; facilities are thin outside Kathua town.
  • Avoid July and August, when heavy monsoon rain can disrupt roads.

Easiest first

Places in Kathua sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (2)

  • Airwan Nilkantheshwar Temple (Places of worship · 30-45 minutes) — A short walk from the road with a few steps at the shrine; usually manageable for older visitors, with limited seating and basic facilities.
  • Mata Bala Sundri Temple, Nagri (Places of worship · 30-45 minutes) — Usually a short walk from the road. Expect a few steps, limited seating and queues during festivals.

Some walking — plan a break (3)

  • Bani and Sarthal Meadow (Places to visit · Overnight; a very long day otherwise) — Hill roads are long and winding; at about 4,200 ft Bani is comfortable, but Sarthal is around 7,000 ft and cold in winter. Facilities are basic and medical care is far.
  • Jasrota Fort (Places to visit · 1-1.5 hours) — Paths are uneven and there is little seating or shade. Older visitors can enjoy the gateway and the first courtyards; the upper walls and ridge involve a climb on rough ground.
  • Jasrota Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · 2-3 hours) — Tracks inside are rough and partly unpaved, with little seating or shade and no published facilities. Older travellers can enjoy a short walk near the entrance or the viewpoint, but should avoid the heat from April to September.

Practical tips for Kathua

  • Heat. Summers reach around 40 degrees C. Plan outdoor stops for early morning between April and September.
  • Monsoon. July and August bring heavy rain; hill roads can be disrupted. Keep spare days.
  • Access checks. Confirm entry rules for Jasrota sanctuary and fort with the wildlife department or ASI before going, as fees and timings are not published.
  • Cash. Carry cash for temples, dhabas and small purchases outside Kathua town.
  • Hill trips. Basohli, Bani and Sarthal are long and winding; leave early, plan an overnight and confirm stays.
  • Dress and etiquette. Dress modestly at shrines, remove footwear and ask before photographing inside.
  • Highway. NH 44 is busy with trucks; use daylight for driving and agree a driver for the day.
