Kawardha, also spelt Kabirdham, is the district headquarters of Kabirdham in north-western Chhattisgarh. It sits at about 353 m, among the Maikal hills near the Madhya Pradesh border, and was the capital of a princely state founded in 1751 that joined the Indian Union on 1 January 1948.

Most visitors come for Bhoramdeo Temple, a Shiva temple of roughly the 11th century about 18 km from town, often called the Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh for its carved exterior. The nearby Madwa Mahal and a reservoir by the temple make an easy half-day, and the Bhoramdeo Mahotsav, held usually in March, adds music and dance.

Behind the temple lies Bhoramdev Wildlife Sanctuary, about 352 square kilometres of forest on the Kanha–Achanakmar corridor. Tigers, leopards and bears are recorded, but tourism is still developing, so treat it as a landscape to enjoy rather than a safari guarantee.

Kawardha is quiet, small and easy to manage. The main logistics are distance: Raipur, the nearest major airport, is roughly 130 to 150 km by road, and public transport is limited. A hired car makes the visit comfortable for older travellers.

Food and restaurants

Food in Kawardha is simple and local. Chhattisgarhi home-style meals with rice, dal and seasonal vegetables are found in small restaurants, with Hindi-belt thalis in the main market. Larger hotels serve North Indian dishes.

Bring snacks and water for the temple and forest trips, as there are few options at the sites. Choose busy places and drink bottled water. Tea stalls near the temple parking sell simple snacks.

Shopping

Shopping is local: everyday goods in the main market, and a few craft stalls during the Bhoramdeo Mahotsav. There is no major craft district, so buy modest souvenirs only.

Check for the Mahotsav in March if you want folk crafts and performances.

Choose without overthinking

Which Kawardha experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Bhoramdeo Temple or Bhoramdev sanctuary?

The temple is the reliable highlight, with carvings, easy access and a lake. The sanctuary is a landscape and a long shot for wildlife, with limited facilities. Do the temple first and add the forest if time allows.

Day trip from Raipur or an overnight in Kawardha?

A day trip is possible but long, with roughly 130 to 150 km each way. An overnight lets you see the temple and Madwa Mahal without rushing, and is kinder to older travellers.

March festival or a quiet winter visit?

The Bhoramdeo Mahotsav brings dance and crafts, but also crowds and heat. A winter weekday is calmer and better for photography.
