Before you go

Kawardha with elderly parents: what to know

  • Hire a car with a driver from Raipur or Kawardha; public transport is limited.
  • Visit Bhoramdeo early to avoid heat on stone floors, and wear socks.
  • Carry water, snacks and any medicines; facilities near the sanctuary are minimal.
  • Confirm sanctuary and safari access with the forest division before travelling.
  • Avoid driving on forest roads after dusk.
  • Check for the March Mahotsav if you dislike crowds, and plan accordingly.

Easiest first

Places in Kawardha sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (4)

  • Bhoramdeo Lake (Places to visit · 20–40 minutes) — Level approach from the temple area with open views. Seating and shade are limited, so carry a hat and water and avoid the midday sun.
  • Bhoramdeo Open-Air Sculpture Gallery and Brick Shrine (Culture and craft · 20–30 minutes) — Level ground within the complex; shade and seating are limited, so carry water and a hat and take it slowly.
  • Bhoramdeo Temple (Places of worship · 1–1.5 hours) — Short, level approach and a raised stone platform; the temple has a few steps but is manageable for most. Stone floors heat up by midday, so go early.
  • Madwa Mahal (Places to visit · 30–45 minutes) — Short walk on level ground, a few steps up to the structure. There is little shade or seating, so keep the visit short in warm weather.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Bhoramdev Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half a day) — Roads to the forest edge are fine, but the sanctuary has few built facilities. Expect long drives, uneven tracks and heat; older visitors should stay on the temple and lake side and treat the forest as a drive-through.

Practical tips for Kawardha

  • Heat. April to June is very hot. Visit temples in the first hours after sunrise; stone floors heat up by midday.
  • Monsoon. July to September brings heavy rain and slippery roads; forest access can be restricted. Check conditions before travelling.
  • Getting around. Hire a car with a driver. Local autos and buses are limited and slow.
  • Temple etiquette. Dress modestly, remove footwear and ask before photographing worshippers.
  • Forest rules. Stay on marked roads, follow forest-department instructions and avoid driving after dusk.
  • Money. Carry cash; card and UPI acceptance can be patchy in smaller places.
  • Mobile coverage. Signal may be weak near the sanctuary. Download maps and tell your driver your plan.
  • Facilities. There are few shops or toilets at the sites. Carry water and snacks.
