The short answer

Best areas to stay in Kaziranga

  1. 01

Kohora area (main park entrance and village)

Best for: Visitors who want the closest access to the park and the most hotel options

Kohora is where most safaris start and where the bulk of hotels and guesthouses cluster. It is about 15–20 minutes by road from the Kohora gate. Unbeatable for convenience, though the 'town' is basically a strip of hotels and a small bazaar. Hotels range from budget guesthouses to mid-range resorts; many have in-house restaurants.

  2. 02

    Agaratoli area (eastern gate)

Best for: Travellers seeking a quieter experience and access to the eastern section of the park

About 25 km from Kohora, Agaratoli is smaller and quieter, with fewer hotels. Good for visitors who want a retreat away from the small bustle of Kohora and prefer a less crowded safari gate. Roads to reach here are rougher; a private car is essential.

  3. 03

    Bagori area (western gate)

Best for: Access to the western park section and proximity to Guwahati

About 40 km from Kohora, Bagori is the gateway to the western park. It is closer to Guwahati and has fewer tourists. A quieter option for serious wildlife watchers, though accommodation is limited and basic.

  4. 04

Jorhat (nearby town, 45 km away)

Best for: Visitors wanting a town base with more amenities and day-trip access to the park

Jorhat is a proper market town with hospitals, restaurants and shops. Many mid-range and budget hotels available. A day trip to Kaziranga from Jorhat is feasible, though dawn safaris require an early start. Better option for families who need town facilities.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

For parents and senior travellers

Comfort notes for Kaziranga

  • Book an elephant safari instead of or alongside a jeep safari. Open jeeps on bumpy tracks are tiring; elephant backs move more gently and sometimes offer closer animal views.
  • Do the early safari (dawn start is unavoidable for good viewing), but rest thoroughly after. A 3–4 hour morning activity followed by a 4–5 hour afternoon rest is the standard rhythm.
  • Choose a hotel with a ground-floor room; many properties lack lifts. Ask about this when booking.
  • Hire a car and driver if you plan to visit multiple gates or do side trips like Mikir Hill. Roads are rough in places, and having your own vehicle with a driver means you can rest between stops.
