Khammam is a working city on the Munneru river in eastern Telangana, about 193 km from Hyderabad. It is not on the standard tourist circuit, which suits travellers who prefer quiet, local places to polished attractions.

The centre of interest is the hill in the middle of town. Khammam Fort, a Kakatiya-era stronghold with ten gates, bastions and a stepped well, rewards a morning climb with views over the city. Nearby, the Stambhadri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple explains where the city's name comes from: according to tradition, Stambhadri, the pillar hill, became Kambhadri and finally Khammam.

For an easy outing, Lakaram Lake offers a tank bund, a park and a long footbridge, best near sunset. Beyond the city, the Buddhist site at Nelakondapalli is about 21 km away, and the Kinnerasani sanctuary lies near Kothagudem on a longer day trip.

Plan for a car and driver, early starts for the fort and a rest after lunch. Summers are hot, with May averaging a high above 40 °C, so the cool months from November to February are the sensible window.

Food to try in Khammam

Food and restaurants

Khammam's food is mostly South Indian and Telugu: idli, dosa, vada, bonda and puri for breakfast, and rice with curries and curd for the main meal. Biryani is a local favourite, and haleem and harees are traditional during Ramadan. Ask your hotel for a restaurant that serves Telangana meals and keep to freshly cooked food in hot weather. Street snacks such as bonda and mirchi are widely sold in the evening.

Choose without overthinking

Which Khammam experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Khammam Fort or Lakaram Lake?

Choose the fort for history and views if you can climb; choose the lake for an easy, flat evening.

Nelakondapalli or Kinnerasani for a day trip?

Nelakondapalli is closer, about 21 km, and suits a half day. Kinnerasani is about 95 km away and needs a full day.

Temple first or fort first?

Do the fort first, in the cool early morning, and the temple later when you need a shorter, shaded visit.
