Before you go
Khammam with elderly parents: what to know
- Climb Khammam Fort early and use the rest shelters; skip the summit if the steps look too much.
- Lakaram Lake's tank bund is flat and the easiest evening outing.
- Avoid May and June for outdoor sights; highs average above 36 °C.
- Hire a car and driver for Nelakondapalli and Kinnerasani, and carry water.
- Dress modestly and be ready to remove footwear at the temple.
- Temples are busiest on Sundays and festival days.
Easiest first
Places in Khammam sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (2)
- Lakaram Lake (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours) — Flat bund paths and park seating make this one of the easiest outings in Khammam. Shade is limited in the afternoon.
- Nelakondapalli Buddhist Site (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours on site; half a day with travel) — The site is on level ground with some uneven paths. Shade and seating are limited, so carry water and a hat.
Some walking — plan a break (1)
- Stambhadri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple (Places of worship · 45–90 minutes) — The temple is reached by a climb or steps from the road. Take your time and use railings; queues form on festival days and weekends.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Khammam Fort (Places to visit · 1.5–2 hours) — Carved steps with railings lead up the hill, and two rest shelters have been built, but the climb is long and the upper ground is uneven with little shade. Older visitors can stop at the lower gates and still enjoy the view.
