Before you go

Khao Lak with elderly parents: what to know

  • Choose a hotel on the flat beach strip and use a hired car or hotel taxi; the main road is fast and walking between beaches is unpleasant.
  • The Similan Islands involve boat boarding, wading ashore and bumpy speedboat rides. Skip them if anyone has knee, back or heart concerns, or choose the national park coast instead.
  • Plan one outing per day, with a rest after lunch. Heat and humidity are high all year and tropical rain can arrive without warning.
  • Carry travel insurance with medical cover and keep prescriptions in their original packaging. Wikivoyage mentions a clinic at Bang Niang for minor ailments; for serious care you may need to travel to Phuket, so ask your hotel about the nearest suitable hospital.
  • In the wet season, avoid sea swimming when warning flags are up and follow hotel advice on currents.
  • Dress modestly at memorials and temples: cover shoulders and knees, and keep your voice low.

Easiest first

Places in Khao Lak sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (5)

  • Ban Nam Khem Tsunami Memorial (Culture and craft · One hour) — Mostly level grounds and short paths, with limited shade. Seating is modest, and the content can be heavy. Offer relatives the option to wait in the car or in the shade.
  • Bang Niang Beach (Places to visit · Two to three hours, or a base for several days) — The beach is flat and wide, but the sand is soft and the walk from the road can be long. Shade is limited on the open sections, so carry water, use a hat and pick a beachfront cafe with chairs for the hottest hours.
  • Nang Thong Beach (Bang La On) (Places to visit · Two to three hours, or a base stay) — The frontage is flat and many hotels provide shade, sun beds and drinks. The sand is soft, the sun is strong, and nobody should rely on beach access near the end of the day without a torch.
  • Police Boat 813 Memorial (Culture and craft · 30 to 60 minutes) — Mostly flat ground, a short walk from the car park to the boat, with limited shade. Benches and rest points are modest, and the subject matter can be emotionally heavy for some visitors.
  • Takua Pa Town (Culture and craft · One to two hours) — Mostly flat streets with traffic and uneven pavements. Shade is patchy. A taxi to a central drop-off makes it easier for older travellers.

Some walking — plan a break (5)

  • Hat Thai Mueang and Khao Lampi (Places to visit · Half a day) — The beach is flat but remote, with few facilities. The waterfall trails are shorter than Khao Sok's but can be wet and uneven. Bring shade, water and a plan for toilets.
  • Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park (Places to visit · Half a day) — Forest tracks can be uneven, wet and root-covered, with few handrails. Humidity is high. The coastal section is easier, and a hired car with driver helps. If anyone has knee or heart concerns, choose short walks only.
  • Khao Sok National Park (Places to visit · Full day; or one night) — Long road transfers and boat rides on the lake, plus walking on forest trails. Some trails are steep and slippery. Cheaper day trips can be tiring; consider an overnight stay or a lake-only itinerary.
  • Laem Pakarang (Pakarang Cape) (Places to visit · One hour) — Access is by flat tracks and beach sand, which is soft in places. At low tide the walk can be longer, and there is little shade. Older travellers are best off with a taxi to the nearest access point and a short, slow stroll.
  • Similan Islands (Mu Ko Similan) (Places to visit · Full day by speedboat; longer by standard boat) — Boarding involves stepping on and off boats and, at the islands, wading ashore. Speedboat rides can be bumpy. Shade on the beaches is limited. This is a hard outing for anyone with knee, back or heart problems.

Practical tips for Khao Lak

  • Weather and sea. The wet season runs from about May to October with very heavy rain; Takua Pa averages about 3,870 mm a year. Seas are roughest then and boat trips are cancelled.
  • Getting around. Highway 4 is fast and walking between beaches is unpleasant. Use hotel taxis, pre-booked cars or songthaews, and agree fares first.
  • Tsunami safety. The 2004 tsunami hit this coast hard. If you hear sirens, move inland to higher ground, and ask your hotel about the evacuation routes.
  • Money. Thailand uses the baht. Carry cash for markets, small restaurants and boat operators, where cards are not always accepted.
  • Dress and etiquette. Cover shoulders and knees at memorials and temples, remove shoes where asked and keep your voice low. Do not pose for casual photographs at memorials.
  • Motorbikes. Wikivoyage warns that rental motorbikes have no insurance and helmet checkpoints fine riders. Families are safer with a car and driver.
  • Vegetarian and Jain food. Ask your hotel in advance for vegetarian meals, say jay for strict vegetarian, and carry dry snacks for boat tours and long drives.
  • Visa and insurance. Check current entry rules on Thailand's official e-visa portal. Travel insurance with medical cover matters, because treatment is paid for on the spot.
