Why it matters

Why Siddheshwar Mahadev Temple, Nemawar is worth your time

Siddheshwar is described as the loftiest temple of the Parmara dynasty, a fine example of the Bhumija style that also appears at Udayapur's Udayeshwara temple. The Parmaras ruled Malwa for centuries and built across the region, so this temple is a good way to see their architecture outside the larger names of Ujjain and Dhar.

Nemawar is sacred to both Hindus and Digambara Jains, and the Narmada is among India's most revered rivers. Together they make the town a living pilgrimage place, not only a monument.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan the visit for the morning, when light picks out the carving and the Narmada is quiet. The Siddheshwar temple faces west, unlike most Hindu temples, and has a star-shaped base and a tall stacked spire. Walk around the platform before you go in, and look at the ornament on the spire and the shrines for Narmada Mata and Ganesh nearby.

Nemawar sits on the left bank of the Narmada opposite Handia and is a stop on the Parikrama route, so you may see pilgrims with staffs and bags. The river ghats are a short walk away. Nearby, a roofless, unfinished Sun temple stands to the north and the Nabhi Kund and Surya Kund lie in the river. Keep to a short, respectful circuit.

Travel by road from Kheoni via Khategaon, or stop here on the way to Indore. Eat before or after, since the town has only basic food stalls.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Go in the morning and take a driver
  • Dress modestly and remove footwear
  • Confirm entry and photography rules at the site
