Kheoni is not a town you travel to for its streets. It is a forest: Kheoni Wildlife Sanctuary, a dry deciduous patch of teak, tendu and bamboo of roughly 130 square kilometres in Kannod tehsil of Dewas district, tucked into the Vindhya foothills between Indore and Bhopal. For years it was known mostly to local naturalists. Tigers walking in from the neighbouring Ratapani landscape began to be photographed by camera traps in 2019, and the sanctuary has been quietly coming onto the wildlife map since.
It helps to arrive with the right picture. This is a young, small-scale visit, not Kanha or Bandhavgarh. Facilities are basic, mobile coverage is patchy, the safari season opens only after the monsoon, and the main reward is a morning in a forest with spotted deer, nilgai, birds and, with luck and patience, a leopard or a tiger. Plan the days around a single morning drive and a single evening one, and treat everything else as a bonus.
The surroundings add a little variety. A spring-fed Shiva shrine at Bal Ganga sits inside the forest, a watchtower viewpoint looks over the Vindhya ridges, and the Narmada pilgrim town of Nemawar, with its large Parmara-period Siddheshwar temple, is a sensible half-day away. Most families will base themselves in a forest rest house or a lodge near Khategaon, or make a long day trip from Indore.

Kheoni itinerary
One good day
1 day in Kheoni
Leave Indore before dawn so you reach the sanctuary gate for the morning drive; check the safari booking in advance as the entry rules are not widely published. Spend the drive looking for chital, nilgai, birds and tracks, then stop at Bal Ganga for a few quiet minutes at the spring-fed Shiva shrine. Have lunch near Khategaon or Kannod, and start the long drive back by mid-afternoon so you are not on the highway after dark.
Day-by-day plan →Two days
2 days in Kheoni
Drive from Indore or Bhopal to the sanctuary area, check into the forest rest house or a lodge near Khategaon, and rest through the afternoon. Join the evening drive if booked, and walk to a viewpoint such as the watchtower at Kalamatalai only if the light and your energy allow.
Day-by-day plan →Three unhurried days
3 days in Kheoni
Travel in from Indore or Bhopal and spend the afternoon at your lodge. A short walk near the rest house is enough; the point is an early start tomorrow.
