Before you go
Kheoni with elderly parents: what to know
- Treat this as a 2-night trip, not a day trip: the road from Indore or Bhopal is long, and the best wildlife hours are dawn and dusk.
- Book the safari and any rest-house stay ahead through the forest department or the MP ecotourism route; do not assume a walk-in slot.
- Safari vehicles are open and the tracks are rough. Bring a cushion or rolled shawl for the back, a hat and layers for the cold morning air.
- Mobile coverage is poor around the sanctuary. Download maps, tell family your plan and carry any regular medicines plus a basic first-aid kit.
- Heat is the main risk: April and May regularly reach about 40 C in this region, so choose November to February if you can.
- The Kalamatalai tower and Eco View Point involve climbing and uneven ground; skip them if stairs or balance are an issue.
Easiest first
Places in Kheoni sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (2)
- Bal Ganga Temple (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — The shrine is small and the walk from the vehicle is short, though tracks are rough and there are no facilities. Older visitors can usually manage it; confirm access with the forest guide first.
- Kheoni Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half a day for one safari; one night to do dawn and dusk drives) — The drive is in an open vehicle on rough forest tracks, so expect bumps and dust; there are no steep climbs. Facilities are basic, mobile coverage is poor and the road in is long, so older travellers should stay overnight and bring a cushion and layers.
Some walking — plan a break (3)
- Daulatpur Forest Walk and Waterfalls (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours) — Forest trails can be uneven, wet and slippery in the rains, and there are no benches or toilets on route. Older travellers should ask for a short route or skip the waterfall approach.
- Kalamatalai Sunset Point (Places to visit · About an hour including the walk and climb) — The iron watchtower is old and involves a climb; it is not suitable for anyone with balance problems or a fear of heights. Younger members can go up while others wait at the base.
- Siddheshwar Mahadev Temple, Nemawar (Places of worship · 1 to 2 hours) — The site has steps and uneven ground at the temple platform and the river steps; take a driver who can drop you near the entrance and expect limited seating and toilets.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Dewas Tekri (Chamunda and Tulja Bhavani Temples) (Places of worship · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The approach is a broad flight of stone steps up a hill roughly 91 m high, with limited seating; travellers with knee or heart problems should consider skipping it or ask locally about alternate access.

Practical tips for Kheoni
- Book ahead. Safari and rest-house bookings run through the forest department and the MP ecotourism routes. Confirm the booking, vehicle and entry time by phone a day before.
- Heat. Summers reach about 40 C in this region. Visit from November to February if you can, and use April and May only for early drives.
- Cold mornings. Dawn drives in an open vehicle are cold in December and January. Pack a jacket, scarf and light gloves.
- Mobile coverage. Network is poor around the sanctuary. Save offline maps and the driver's number, and tell someone your route.
- Money. Carry cash for tips, tea and local purchases; ATMs are in larger towns like Khategaon and Kannod, not near the forest.
- Clothing. Wear dull greens, browns or khaki and closed shoes. Avoid perfume and bright colours on a drive.
- Photography. A zoom lens of at least 200 mm helps for birds and distant deer; check with the forest staff on any restrictions on drones or flash.
- Closures. Safari tracks close in the monsoon. Bal Ganga and other forest sites may be hard to reach in the rains, so ask before you go.
