Plan 01
1 day in Kheoni
- 01
Day 1: Morning safari from Indore
Leave Indore before dawn so you reach the sanctuary gate for the morning drive; check the safari booking in advance as the entry rules are not widely published. Spend the drive looking for chital, nilgai, birds and tracks, then stop at Bal Ganga for a few quiet minutes at the spring-fed Shiva shrine. Have lunch near Khategaon or Kannod, and start the long drive back by mid-afternoon so you are not on the highway after dark.
Plan 02
2 days in Kheoni
- 01
Day 1: Arrive and settle
Drive from Indore or Bhopal to the sanctuary area, check into the forest rest house or a lodge near Khategaon, and rest through the afternoon. Join the evening drive if booked, and walk to a viewpoint such as the watchtower at Kalamatalai only if the light and your energy allow.
- 02
Day 2: Dawn drive and Nemawar
Take the early morning safari, then breakfast at your base. In the late morning, drive towards Nemawar to see the Siddheshwar temple above the Narmada, and carry on to Indore or Harda from there.
Plan 03
3 days in Kheoni
- 01
Day 1: Arrive and rest
Travel in from Indore or Bhopal and spend the afternoon at your lodge. A short walk near the rest house is enough; the point is an early start tomorrow.
- 02
Day 2: Two drives and Bal Ganga
Do the dawn safari, return for breakfast and a rest, and visit Bal Ganga and the Eco View Point in the middle of the day if tracks are open. Take the evening drive for the best light and waterhole activity.
- 03
Day 3: Daulatpur and Nemawar
Spend the morning on a guided nature walk around Daulatpur, then drive to Nemawar for the Siddheshwar temple. Break the journey home at Dewas for the Tekri hill temples if you are heading to Indore with energy to spare.
Pacing
Pacing a Kheoni trip for parents and children
- Treat this as a 2-night trip, not a day trip: the road from Indore or Bhopal is long, and the best wildlife hours are dawn and dusk.
- Book the safari and any rest-house stay ahead through the forest department or the MP ecotourism route; do not assume a walk-in slot.
- Safari vehicles are open and the tracks are rough. Bring a cushion or rolled shawl for the back, a hat and layers for the cold morning air.
- Mobile coverage is poor around the sanctuary. Download maps, tell family your plan and carry any regular medicines plus a basic first-aid kit.
- Heat is the main risk: April and May regularly reach about 40 C in this region, so choose November to February if you can.
- The Kalamatalai tower and Eco View Point involve climbing and uneven ground; skip them if stairs or balance are an issue.
