Plan 01

1 day in Kodaikanal

  1. 01

Day 1: Lake walk and a viewpoint

Start early with a circumambulation of Kodai Lake—a pleasant 5-kilometre walk that takes 2 to 2.5 hours at an easy pace, with benches scattered around for rest stops. Stop for tea and snacks at a lakeside vendor. In the afternoon, visit either Pillar Rocks, a cluster of three granite monoliths with views across the plains, or Coaker's Walk, a gentle 1-kilometre path cut into the hillside with a tended garden and extensive views—both are short drives from the lake. Return to the bazaar for an early dinner and an evening stroll along the lakefront as light fades.

Plan 02

2 days in Kodaikanal

  1. 01

Day 1: Lake immersion and Coaker's Walk

Arrive and walk around Kodai Lake in two stages—either the full circuit or just the pleasant north and east shores, depending on energy and pace. Sit by the water for a long breakfast or mid-morning tea at a lakeside spot. In the afternoon, take a short drive to Coaker's Walk, a maintained 1-kilometre path with the best views of the Vaigai Dam and the plains below on clear days. Return to town, explore the small bazaar for textiles and local crafts, and dine on Tamil vegetarian cuisine or Continental fare.

  2. 02

Day 2: Waterfalls and temple walk

Visit Bear Shola Falls or Silver Cascade Falls in the morning—both are short drives and involve a moderate walk down to water. Bear Shola is easier and less crowded than Silver Cascade, but Silver Cascade is a more impressive curtain of water. Stop for lunch at a roadside dhaba or return to town. In the afternoon, visit the small Sri Tanumalayanswamy Temple at the lake, a simple shrine popular with local worshippers, then browse the shops on Bazaar Road. Finish with a sunset from a hilltop if skies permit, or linger by the lake as mist rises at dusk.

Plan 03

3 days in Kodaikanal

  1. 01

Day 1: Lake and evening bazaar

Walk the Kodai Lake circumference at a very easy pace, breaking the circuit into stages and spending time on benches. Have lunch near the water. In the afternoon, rest at your hotel if needed, then explore the lakeside and bazaar areas. Dine early and enjoy the town as light fades.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Viewpoints and falls

Visit Pillar Rocks in the morning for granite monoliths and plain views, then drive to Bear Shola Falls or Silver Cascade for a waterfall walk. Lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, explore Coaker's Walk for different views of the valley below. End with a rented horse carriage ride on the lake road, popular with families.

  3. 03

Day 3: Day trip and departure

Drive to Palani, about an hour away, to see the Palani Murugan Temple, one of South India's most important pilgrimage sites, or explore Green Valley View and other roadside stops. Return to Kodaikanal for a final meal and browse the bazaar for last-minute purchases. Alternatively, stay in town and visit any missed spots, such as the Shola Forest Nursery or a lakeside café for tea and reflection before leaving.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • The town is compact and mostly level near the lake and bazaar. Walking around Kodai Lake is gentle and can be broken into stages with many benches along the way.
  • Coaker's Walk is a well-maintained path with minimal climbing, making it ideal for older visitors. Pillar Rocks involve more uneven terrain and stairs, so assess mobility before visiting.
  • Altitude here (2,133 metres) is high but most visitors acclimatize well. A gradual first day, with afternoon rests, helps. Consult a doctor if you have significant heart or lung conditions.
  • Hire a car and driver for full days to break up walking. Short hops between sights reduce fatigue and allow midday rest at the hotel.
  • Lakeside benches offer frequent rest stops during the circumambulation. Break the walk into two or three sessions rather than one long loop.
  • Restaurants close fairly early (8 to 8.30 pm), so plan dinner early. Tea houses and bakeries serve throughout the day, making them good low-key options for rest and refreshment.
