Why it matters

Why White Sand Beach (Hat Sai Khao) is worth your time

White Sand Beach is where most visitors first meet Koh Chang. It is the most developed of the island's west-coast beaches, which makes it the practical choice for families who want a pharmacy, a minimart and a choice of dinners within a short walk. That convenience is the main reason to come, rather than any single sight.

It also shows the island's split character: a built-up west coast facing the sunset, and a wilder, quieter east coast with no sandy beaches. Understanding that helps you decide where to stay. If you want shops and activity, White Sand Beach suits; if you want quiet, the beaches further south do.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Sunset from the sand

The beach faces west, so clear evenings give the island's best light.

  2. 02

    Walk the shore at dawn

Early morning is cool and almost empty.

  3. 03

    Dinner on the strip

The road behind the beach has the most restaurants to choose from.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Arrive by ferry at the north of the island and ride a songthaew or hotel transfer south; White Sand Beach is the first main beach you reach. Walk the sand early, when it is cool and the shore is quiet, then use the road behind the beach for lunch. The southern end of the beach is rockier and less sandy, so most swimmers stay in the middle and north.

The strip behind the sand holds most of the island's tourist services: restaurants, minimarts, massage places, dive shops and beer bars. Thai kitchens here will cook vegetable dishes if asked, but do not assume any menu is meat-free. Stay for sunset if the sky is clear; the beach faces west, so evenings are the best light of the day.

If you want fewer people, walk north along the shore away from the busiest stretch, or move to Klong Prao or Kai Bae for a quieter stay.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Ask your hotel whether the room is near a beach bar
  • Carry sun cover for midday
  • Confirm songthaew fares before you ride
  • Check sea conditions in the rainy season
