Plan 01
1 day in Koh Phangan
- 01
Day 1: Thong Sala, a waterfall and a temple view
Arrive on an early boat and hire a car with a driver at the pier. Start at Phaeng Waterfall near Thong Sala for the lower fall, which is a short walk from the car park, then drive up to the quiet Wat Maduea Wan if time allows. Have lunch in Thong Sala and rest. In the afternoon drive the Chaloklum road to the Kuan Yin Chinese temple for the view over the bay, then continue to Chaloklum village for the evening. Return to Thong Sala before the last boat, which tends to leave in the evening, so confirm the time on the day.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Kuan Yin Chinese Temple 30 to 45 minutes Moderate Morning or late afternoon Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Kuan Yin Chinese Temple: Reached by a short drive up the hill, with steps between pavilions. Take it slowly in the heat; there is some shade and good views.

Day 1: Thong Sala and the west coast
Walk Thong Sala in the morning, including the town temple and the pier area, then visit Wat Phu Khao Noi north of town, a short drive away. After lunch and a rest, drive to Srithanu and Zen Beach for the sunset, and eat at Mama Market's evening food court, where many stalls are vegan.

- 02
Day 2: A waterfall and the north coast
Go to Phaeng Waterfall early, when it is cooler, and decide on the Domsila viewpoint trail depending on energy. Drive to the Kuan Yin temple and Chaloklum, and take a longtail boat to Bottle Beach for lunch if the sea is calm. Return by the afternoon boat.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat) Half a day Moderate February to April; avoid late October to mid-December Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat): By boat it is easy, although you step into a longtail at the pier or in surf. The hikes are steep, rooty and shadeless, and the viewpoint ends in a scramble. No scooters are allowed on the track.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Koh Phangan trip for parents and children
- Arrange a car with a driver for sightseeing. Songthaews can be crowded and slow, and scooters are risky on the steep, sandy-cornered roads, especially to Thong Nai Pan and Than Sadet.
- Choose waterfalls by effort. Phaeng's lower fall is about 50 m from the car park; the upper fall and the Domsila viewpoint add steep, rooty paths. Than Sadet's pools are close to the road, but the riverside path onward is long.
- Temples such as Wat Khao Tham are on hillsides with steps and no lifts. Wat Phu Khao Noi and the Kuan Yin temple are easier to approach. Wear slip-on shoes and carry a shawl to cover shoulders and knees.
- Bottle Beach has no road access. Take the longtail boat rather than the hike, and check the sea conditions, since boats stop in rough weather, particularly from about late October to December.
- Medical care: Koh Phangan Hospital (government), Thai International Hospital Phangan and Phangan International Hospital are on the island; serious cases are transferred to Koh Samui or the mainland. Carry travel insurance that covers evacuation and confirm emergency numbers.
- Heat peaks at about 32 to 33 degrees Celsius in the hot months. Plan outings for early morning or late afternoon and rest at midday.
