- 01
Thong Sala
Best for: Short stays and anyone who wants the pier, banks, supermarkets and a hospital close by
Good to know: The island's main town and ferry port. Practical rather than pretty, with the most convenient access to Thong Sala's markets and boats. The beach here is not a destination, so pair it with day drives.
Sights in this area: Chaloklum Fishing Village, Kuan Yin Chinese Temple, Phaeng Waterfall and Domsila Viewpoint, Than Sadet Waterfall and Royal Monograms, Thong Nai Pan Bays, Wat Khao Tham, Wat Pho Herbal Sauna, Wat Phu Khao Noi, Zen Beach and Srithanu
- 02
Srithanu and the west coast
Best for: Wellness-minded travellers who want sunsets, yoga and vegan cafes
Good to know: Around Zen Beach, Srithanu and Hin Kong. Calm in the evening, with Mama Market and many cafes, but the lanes down to some beaches are unpaved and unlit.
- 03
Thong Nai Pan
Best for: Families and couples after calm water and upmarket resorts
Good to know: Two sheltered bays on the north-east coast. Pleasant outside the monsoon, but about 35 to 45 minutes from Thong Sala by a steep, winding road, so you will mostly eat and swim near your resort.
- 04
Chaloklum and the north
Best for: Quiet seaside stays and trips to Bottle Beach
Good to know: A working fishing village with a Sunday walking street and seafood restaurants, away from the party side. Fewer shops and no hospital in the village.
- 05
Haad Rin
Best for: Only travellers who want the Full Moon Party area
Good to know: The most developed and busiest beach town, with nightly bar noise and large crowds on party nights. Book far ahead for party dates, and avoid it if you want a calm family or senior stay.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
