Why it matters
Why Thong Nai Pan Bays is worth your time
Thong Nai Pan is where Koh Phangan's quieter, family-friendly side is clearest. The sheltered bays give shallow water and a resort setting that suits older travellers more than the party beaches do.
The trade-off is distance. It adds long drives to any sightseeing, and the monsoon from October to December brings high waves and suspended boats. If you accept that, it is one of the island's best places to simply rest.

How to experience it
Thong Nai Pan is two bays: Noi in the north is about 600 m long with most of the upscale resorts and a walking street, and Yai in the south is about 1 km long and quieter, with mid-range stays. You can walk between them in 20 to 25 minutes.
Outside the monsoon the water is calm, clear and gently sloping, which suits swimmers and children. There is no reef, so snorkelling is poor. Both bays have ATMs, 7-Elevens, pharmacies, a small clinic and more than 20 restaurants, though the hospital is about 40 minutes away in Thong Sala.
Book transport in advance and set off early, as the road is steep and unlit. Watch the flags: heavy swell and red flags mean stay out of the water.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Use a car or taxi, not a beginner scooter
- Fill fuel in Thong Sala or Ban Tai first
