Haad Rin has two beaches: Sunset Beach (Haad Rin Nai) to the south and the larger Sunrise Beach (Haad Rin Nok) to the north. The town centres on Chicken Corner, a crossroads, and beachfront bars host most of the nightlife, with nightly fire shows at some of them.
The Full Moon Party started in the 1980s (the date is disputed) and has crowds reported between about 5,000 and 30,000. Drug laws are strict, police patrol heavily, and the UK government has warned about assaults and robberies. Literature also notes litter and waste-management problems.
If you want to see the place, come in daylight on a non-party day, swim on Sunrise Beach and leave before evening. On party nights, stay on the west or north of the island, or leave Haad Rin entirely.
