Why it matters
Why Thong Sala Town and Pier is worth your time
Thong Sala is where the island's practical life happens. The pier, banks, supermarkets, pharmacies and hospital are here, so it decides how easy your stay will be. It is also the quickest place to see ordinary Phangan life away from the beach resorts.
It is not pretty, and tourists mostly treat it as a ferry stop. That is a fair summary, but an hour here gives you the cash, medicines, snacks and orientation that make the other days smoother, and the evening market is a good first meal.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Boats from Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Don Sak and Chumphon dock at the pier, and Thong Sala is where most people first set foot on the island. Banks cluster around the pier and main street, and exchange booths line the street. Use the taxi rank near the roundabout, not the pier, to agree a songthaew fare.
The town temple, Wat Rat Charoen, is in the centre and is the starting point of the sea Chak Phra procession at the end of Buddhist Lent. A small Chinese shrine lies in the old town, and Wat Phu Khao Noi is about ten minutes north by car. Shopping is easy at Makro, Big C, Tops and Lotus's, and the fresh market on Thong Sai Road is best early in the morning.
In the evening, walk to the Pantip night market for dinner, or on Saturdays to the walking street. Thong Sala is also the gateway for the hospital, about 3 km north.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Arrive 30 minutes before a boat
- Use ATMs near the pier
- Agree songthaew fares before boarding
- Do not hand over your passport as a scooter deposit
