Why it matters

Why Phaeng Waterfall and Domsila Viewpoint is worth your time

Phaeng is the easiest way to see the forested interior of Koh Phangan, which most visitors miss because they stay on the beaches. It sits inside the national park, so the ticket you buy supports the park that protects the island's hills and watersheds.

For families, it is a gentler outing than Than Sadet on the east coast, and the lower fall keeps older relatives involved even if they skip the climb. The trade-off is seasonality: in the monsoon the water is full but the paths are slick, and in the dry months the path is safe but the water is low. Pick the month to match what your group wants.

How to experience it

Drive from Thong Sala on the Chaloklum road and turn off near Ban Maduea Wan; the paved approach ends at a large car park beside the national park office. Phaeng Noi, the lower fall with a shaded pool, is about 50 m away and works for almost anyone who can walk on an uneven path.

The upper fall, Phaeng Yai, is reached by a steeper path of about 250 m. Wear shoes with grip, because rocks and roots stay wet even in dry weather. From the park area a trail of roughly 1.8 km with a climb of about 165 m leads to the Domsila viewpoint, a granite outcrop with views over the west coast and Koh Samui. Allow 30 to 50 minutes uphill and carry water.

Combine it with Wat Maduea Wan, a temple with a naga-lined staircase on the same side road, and finish the morning in Thong Sala for lunch. In February to April the fall can be little more than a trickle, so treat the walk and the view as the reason to go.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops
  • Carry water and small notes for the fee and parking
  • Skip the pools during or just after heavy rain
  • Go before 10:00 to avoid heat and crowds
  • Check whether the viewpoint trail is open on the day
