The short answer
Maya Bay (Ko Phi Phi Le): what visitors should know first
Go on a boat tour if the sea is calm, but expect rules: no swimming, a time limit, and a landing away from the beach. It is a short visit, so combine it with Pi Leh and snorkelling stops.
History and context
The story behind Maya Bay (Ko Phi Phi Le)
Ko Phi Phi Le is a limestone island of about 2 square kilometres within Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. During the 1999 production of The Beach, the beach was landscaped, and a 2006 Supreme Court ruling found that the filming harmed the environment.
The bay was closed from 2018 for recovery. It reopened in early 2022 with limits on visitor numbers and time.

Why it matters
Why Maya Bay (Ko Phi Phi Le) is worth your time
Maya Bay shows what happens when a place becomes too popular. The film shoot in 1999 and the tourism boom that followed damaged much of the bay's coral, and the authorities closed the beach from 2018 to give it time to recover.
Its reopening rules are strict, and they are the reason it is still worth visiting: the shorter, quieter visits and the return of blacktip reef sharks to the shallows are a story about conservation working. Go with realistic expectations and a respectful attitude.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Maya Bay is visited on a half-day or full-day boat trip from Ton Sai, usually combined with Pi Leh lagoon and snorkelling. Wikivoyage suggests arriving before 08:00 to avoid the tour-boat crowds that begin from about 09:00.
Since the 2022 reopening, Wikipedia says boats do not enter the bay and swimming is not allowed. Visits are limited to about an hour, and the number of people on the beach at one time is capped. At low tide boats may anchor at Loh Samah and visitors walk through a short stretch of rocks and jungle.
Check current rules with your operator or the national park before you go, because they have changed several times. Sit mid-boat, wear a life jacket, and keep sunscreen away from the water to protect the recovering reef.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
