Koh Phi Phi is a small island group in the Andaman Sea, in Krabi province. Ko Phi Phi Don is the larger island and the only one with permanent residents, about 2,500 according to Wikipedia. Its village, Ton Sai, sits on a low sandy isthmus between two bays and is walked, cycled or crossed by longtail boat, because there are no cars. The smaller island, Ko Phi Phi Le, has no residents and is best known for Maya Bay, which appeared in the 2000 film The Beach.

The islands lie inside Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, which shapes the rules: limits on visits to Maya Bay, small fees at piers and parks, and a growing emphasis on protecting reefs. Visitors arrive by ferry from Krabi, Phuket or Ko Lanta, and many come only for a day. Staying a night or two gives you the quiet hours at either end of the day, when the day-trip boats are gone.

For Indian families the island needs honest planning. Boarding boats, wet landings and steep steps are part of the experience, seas can close ferry routes in the wetter months, and vegetarian, Jain or Indian food is thin on the ground compared with Ao Nang or Phuket. In return you get dramatic limestone scenery, easy walking in the village and sunsets over Loh Dalum Bay.

The 2004 tsunami struck both bays of the isthmus, and the island has rebuilt since. A visit goes best with a calm sea, a flexible schedule, travel insurance with medical cover, and one big outing each day instead of three.

Koh Phi Phi itinerary

One good day

1 day in Koh Phi Phi

Take an early ferry from Krabi or Phuket and drop bags at your guesthouse or a pier left-luggage service. If everyone can manage the climb, go up to the Phi Phi Don Viewpoint first while the air is cooler. Return for lunch in Ton Sai, then join an afternoon longtail or small-boat trip to Maya Bay and Pi Leh lagoon if the sea is calm. Finish with a walk on Loh Dalum Bay before the last ferry. Confirm the return ferry time and give yourself a buffer, because sea conditions can change schedules.

Two days

2 days in Koh Phi Phi

Arrive by morning ferry, settle in and have a slow lunch in Ton Sai. In the late afternoon, climb to the viewpoint only if the group is fit, otherwise stroll Loh Dalum Bay and visit the tsunami memorial. Watch the sunset from the beach and keep dinner simple.

Food to try in Koh Phi Phi

Food and restaurants

Phi Phi's food is mainly southern Thai, with seafood, coconut curries and noodle dishes, plus pizza, pasta and breakfast cafes aimed at visitors. Wikivoyage lists many casual restaurants around Ton Sai, and mentions The Pirate's House as serving Indian and Western food, though we could not verify its current status or whether any Indian kitchen on the island is vegetarian.

In the research for this guide we found no restaurant on the island that we could confirm as pure vegetarian, Jain or vegan, so no listing carries a diet tag. Vegetarians should ask for dishes made without fish sauce, shrimp paste, oyster sauce and egg, and say so clearly in English or with the Thai word for vegetarian food, jay. Fried rice with vegetables, stir-fried vegetables, tofu dishes and fruit are usual fallbacks. Shared woks and oil are common, so strict vegetarians and Jain travellers should carry snacks and speak to their guesthouse or resort about what the kitchen can arrange. Boat-tour lunches are usually Thai-style and may include chicken or fish; request a vegetarian box in advance.

Shopping in Koh Phi Phi

Shopping

Shopping is simple: beachwear, sunscreen, snorkels, T-shirts and small souvenirs from the lanes of Ton Sai, with a few boutiques and minimarts. Prices at stalls are negotiable, but shop and restaurant prices are usually fixed. Do not buy or collect shells, coral or other natural items, which are protected inside the national park. Carry cash for small purchases and boat fares, since cards are not accepted everywhere on the island.

Choose without overthinking

Which Koh Phi Phi experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Maya Bay or Bamboo Island, if you can do only one boat trip?

Maya Bay has the famous cliffs but strict rules: no swimming and a short visit. Bamboo Island offers an easier beach and snorkel day. Choose Maya for the scenery and Bamboo for time in the water.

Stay on Phi Phi or visit as a day trip?

A night or two gives quieter mornings and evenings and flexibility if the sea is rough. A day trip is cheaper but leaves little margin if ferries are delayed.

Ton Sai or Long Beach as a base?

Ton Sai is compact and close to the pier, clinics and restaurants. Long Beach is quieter but needs a boat or hot walk. Older travellers usually prefer Ton Sai.

Viewpoint climb or a beach evening?

The viewpoint gives the best views but is steep and hot. Loh Dalum Bay is flat and easy and gives a gentler sunset.

Koh Phi Phi travel tips

  1. 01

    Sea and ferries

Boats run all year, but rough seas from about May to October can cancel or delay trips. Keep a spare day and avoid tight flight connections.

  2. 02

    Getting around

There are no cars. Walk, cycle or use longtail boats, and agree fares and return times before boarding.

  3. 03

    Money

Thailand uses the baht. Carry cash for boats, park fees and small shops. Fees such as the pier arrival charge and park entry change, so confirm current amounts.

Wikivoyage notes that many islanders are Muslim. Cover up when walking through the village and avoid topless sunbathing.

  5. 05

    Protect the reef

Do not touch coral or marine life, do not feed monkeys, and carry out your rubbish. Maya Bay has had strict rules since reopening in 2022.

  6. 06

    Health and insurance

There are pharmacies and a hospital on the island, but serious cases go to Krabi or Phuket. Carry travel insurance with medical cover.

  7. 07

    Heat and sun

Days are hot and humid all year. Use a hat, sunscreen and water, and rest in the afternoon.

  8. 08

    Nightlife and noise

Bars near Loh Dalum Bay get loud and close by 01:00. Choose accommodation away from the beachfront if you want a quiet night.

Koh Phi Phi with elderly parents: what to know

  • Choose a guesthouse close to the pier and ask for a ground-floor room. Luggage is moved by barrow or by hand, and some stairs are steep.
  • Boat boarding and wet landings are the hardest part of Phi Phi. Pick calm months, sit near the middle of the boat, wear a life jacket and keep one hand free.
