The short answer

Ton Sai Village and Pier: what visitors should know first

Treat Ton Sai as your base or your arrival point. It is flat and compact, with no cars, but expect crowds at ferry times, luggage by hand or barrow, and a modest arrival fee reported at the pier.

History and context

The story behind Ton Sai Village and Pier

Ton Sai is described as the capital and largest settlement on Ko Phi Phi Don, built on a sandy isthmus and badly damaged by the 2004 tsunami. A large deep-water government pier on Tonsai Bay was completed in late 2009.

Why it matters

Why Ton Sai Village and Pier is worth your time

Ton Sai is where almost every visitor starts, and where almost every practical question gets answered: ferry tickets, pharmacy, cash, tours and a meal. Understanding how it works makes the rest of the island easier.

It is also the place that rebuilt after the 2004 tsunami. Walking its lanes with that in mind explains the careful warning signs and the sense of a place that depends entirely on the sea. For older travellers, its compact size is an advantage: nothing in the village is far, which cannot be said of most Thai islands.

How to experience it

Ferries from Krabi, Phuket and Ko Lanta land at the deep-water pier on Tonsai Bay. From there the village spreads across the isthmus: a web of narrow lanes with dive shops, tour desks, cafes, minimarts, guesthouses and a pharmacy or two. Wikivoyage notes that most of Ton Sai can be crossed on foot in about ten minutes, and that there are no cars.

Walk early, before day-trippers arrive from the mainland and the lanes fill. Look at the boat desks to compare tours, but remember that prices are broadly similar and that sea conditions decide what actually runs. In the afternoon, find shade in a cafe and let the day-trip crowds leave on the late ferries.

Evenings are livelier near the beach bars. Families usually do better with a guesthouse on the quieter side of the isthmus or a short boat ride away.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check where your guesthouse is relative to the pier
  • Carry cash for small purchases
  • Dress modestly when walking through the village
  • Confirm the last ferry back before day trips
