Koh Rong is an island in the Gulf of Thailand, about 25 km from Sihanoukville, with a few small villages, a hilly forested interior and a coastline of pale beaches. Wikipedia puts its area at about 78 square kilometres and its population at roughly 4,000 at the 2019 census. Most residents fish or farm, and tourism has grown mainly around the village of Koh Touch.
The island is part of Koh Rong Marine National Park, created in February 2018 as Cambodia's first marine national park. That status is a reminder that this is a place for quiet beaches, snorkelling and night skies rather than monuments. There are no temples to tick off and no big museums. The attraction is time: a long swim, a sunset walk and a dark beach where plankton may glow after dark.
It suits travellers who accept simple comfort. Roads on the island have been under construction, power and water can be limited at smaller places, and Wikivoyage said in 2020 that there was no ATM. Medical help is limited, and for older travellers that matters. Choose a resort with a reliable boat transfer, travel between November and March, and keep your itinerary short.
For Indian families, the main practical points are the Cambodian visa, which Indian passport holders generally need, and food. Pure vegetarian and Jain kitchens are not something I could verify on the island. Vegetarians do better at resorts that mark vegan dishes and will cook without fish sauce on request.

Koh Rong itinerary
One good day
1 day on Koh Rong
Take an early speedboat from Sihanoukville to Koh Touch and confirm your return time before you leave, since the last boats go mid-afternoon. Walk the waterfront, then take a shuttle boat to Long Set Beach for a swim and lunch. Keep the afternoon short and be back at the pier well before the last departure. A day trip works only in the dry season, and sea conditions can cancel it.
Day-by-day plan →Two days
2 days on Koh Rong
Take a morning boat to your beach and check in. Swim early, rest in the heat and walk the sand at sunset. Eat at a resort restaurant and ask about fish sauce in every dish.
Day-by-day plan →Three unhurried days
3 days on Koh Rong
Land at Koh Touch, handle cash and supplies, then move to your beach by shuttle boat or walk. Settle in and swim.
