Why it matters

Why Fisherman's Village, Bophut is worth your time

Fisherman's Village is the historic core of Bophut. Chinese families, many from Hainan, settled on Samui in the nineteenth century and the shophouses here reflect that heritage. The street gives a better sense of the island's past than the big resorts, and it is a good counterpoint to the modern temples elsewhere.

For older travellers, it also offers a rare combination on Samui: a short walkable street, calm water, benches and many places to sit down. It is more suited to couples and adults than to young children, as guides note the area lacks the kids' clubs of larger resorts.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Park or take a taxi to the village and walk the single main street slowly. The old shophouses now hold galleries, cafes and boutique shops, and the best light on the buildings is near sunset. The beach at Bophut is calm, and Ko Phangan can be seen across the water on clear days.

On Friday the main street closes to traffic from late afternoon until around 10 pm, with food stalls, handicrafts and live music. One guide suggests arriving about 5 pm, when vendors are setting up and the crowd has not yet arrived. Most stalls are meat and seafood, so vegetarians should eat at a restaurant or have an early dinner elsewhere.

If you want a quieter experience, visit on another evening: the shophouse restaurants stay open and the street is calm. Book beachfront tables in advance from December to February.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Arrive about 5 pm on Fridays
  • Book dinner ahead from December to February
  • Carry cash for market stalls
  • Check the market is running in the wet season
