The short answer
Na Muang Waterfalls: what visitors should know first
Worth it for Na Muang 1 in the wetter months, when the flow is strong, and only if the weather is dry on the day. Skip Na Muang 2 if you have older parents or small children, because the hike is steep and the rocks are slick.

Why it matters
Why Na Muang Waterfalls is worth your time
Samui's interior is hilly and green, and the waterfalls show the island beyond its beaches. Na Muang 1 is a manageable introduction for most visitors; Na Muang 2 is a real hike with real hazards.
In the dry season the falls can be thin, which is why the wetter months are best for the flow, even though they bring slippery paths and rough seas on the coast. Plan around the weather: after heavy rain, skip the hike and enjoy the first fall from the viewing area.

How to experience it
Arrive before 9 am to avoid tour buses, which come from Chaweng and Lamai between about 10 am and 2 pm. A taxi or car with driver is the easiest way, as public songthaews do not serve the site. Walk the short shaded path to Na Muang 1, which has a pool wide enough for swimming. Be careful: guides warn the depth drops sharply without warning.
Na Muang 2 is about 2 km further inland and involves a steep hike of around 35 minutes each way. Wear grip-soled shoes, not sandals, and use the ropes. Guides report that serious accidents have happened here, so skip it unless you are fit and the weather is dry. Upper trails can be muddy and hazardous in October and November.
The operators offering elephant riding and safari-type experiences near the car parks are criticised for animal welfare, so skip those.
Plan with confidence
