Chaweng
Best for: First-timers who want restaurants, shops and Indian food close by
Good to know: The most developed beach on the island, with the widest choice of hotels and restaurants. It is lively in the evenings and the beach road can be noisy. The airport is only about 2 km away, which helps arrivals but means some aircraft noise. Quieter hotels are at the northern end of the beach and at Chaweng Noi.
- 02
Lamai
Best for: Travellers wanting a relaxed beach, local atmosphere and the southern sights
Good to know: A calmer, more local beach with gentler water. It is close to Hin Ta Hin Yai, Wat Khunaram and Na Muang. Fewer upmarket options than Chaweng, and the evening scene is smaller.
Sights in this area: Hin Ta Hin Yai (Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks)
- 03
Bophut and Fisherman's Village
Best for: Couples, older travellers and anyone who prefers character over big-resort facilities
Good to know: Calm water, old shophouses converted to boutique hotels and restaurants, and the Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem nearby. Several guides note it is geared more to adults than to children, with fewer kids' clubs and water parks.

Mae Nam and Choeng Mon
Best for: Quiet stays away from the main crowds
Good to know: Smaller, quieter stretches on the north coast. Expect fewer restaurants and less nightlife, so you will rely on hotel transfers or a rented car for dinner and sightseeing.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
