The short answer

Baukhungri Hill: what visitors should know first

Go in mid-April for the Baukhungri Festival and the mass trek, or any cool morning for a quiet climb. It is short but steep and uneven, so older travellers should plan to stop early. Confirm access with Bodoland Tourism, because the hill lies inside a protected sanctuary.

History and context

The story behind Baukhungri Hill

Baukhungri Hajw Gakhwnai, the climbing of Baokhungri hill, is held every year on Chaitra Sankranti in mid-April. Bodos have traditionally observed it, and people of all communities now take part.

The BTC tourism department turned it into a three-day Baokhungri Festival to promote ecotourism, with a mass hill trek, an ethnic food festival and cultural performances.

Why it matters

Why Baukhungri Hill is worth your time

For the Bodo community the climb is a spiritual act as much as a trek. The Baukhungri climb on Chaitra Sankranti has long marked the turn into the new year, and its open invitation to people of every faith has made it one of Bodoland's best known gatherings.

It is also the region's main attempt at adventure tourism. The state tourism body promotes the festival to draw visitors, and the paragliding and trekking events show how the hill and sanctuary can earn income while staying protected. Seeing it during Bwisagu is one of the clearest ways to understand Bodo identity today.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Baukhungri is best seen at two very different moments. In mid-April, on the last day of Chaitra, thousands of people from every community climb the hill to welcome Rongjali Bwisagu, the Bodo New Year. The Bodoland Tourism department now builds a three-day festival around it, with the mass trek, an ethnic food festival, cultural performances and adventure sports. Expect crowds, music and a long queue at the start.

On any other day it is a quiet walk. The peak is roughly 10 km south of Kokrajhar and about 1,490 feet high, so the climb is short on paper but steep in the heat. Start at first light, carry water, and wear shoes with a grip. From the top you see the plains, forest and villages around the sanctuary.

Because the hill is inside Chakrashila, treat it as part of a wildlife outing: keep noise low, take your litter out, and ask the tourism office about the best route. You can pair it with a visit to Dheer Beel or the sanctuary trails on the same morning.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Reach the base before dawn on festival day
  • Wear shoes with grip and carry water
  • Confirm festival dates with Bodoland Tourism
  • Keep noise low; it is a sanctuary
  • Skip the summit if joints or heart are a concern
