The short answer

Mahamaya Dham, Bogribari: what visitors should know first

Visit if you are interested in Lower Assam's Shakta tradition. It is about 36 km from Kokrajhar and is best outside Durga Puja, when crowds are very large. Be aware that animal sacrifice is part of the temple's tradition, particularly at Durga Puja.

History and context

The story behind Mahamaya Dham, Bogribari

Local tradition says the Kacharis, Koches and Naths of Parvatjowar first worshipped Mahamaya, and she became the presiding deity of the zamindar of Parvatjowar. Over time Hindus across Lower Assam adopted her.

The temple is described as built in Nilachal style. A founding date is not reliably documented.

Why it matters

Why Mahamaya Dham, Bogribari is worth your time

Mahamaya is regarded as one of the greatest Shakta shrines of Lower Assam, and Wikipedia describes it as second only to Kamakhya in drawing pilgrims. Its goddess was traditionally worshipped by the Kachari, Koch and Nath communities of the Parvatjowar area and was the chief deity of the local zamindars.

That mix of tribal and Hindu devotion is typical of western Assam. Seeing the shrine alongside Bodo cultural sites shows how many layers of belief share this district, and why the temple draws pilgrims from across the region.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan this as a half-day pilgrimage from Kokrajhar. The temple lies at Bogribari in Parbatjhora subdivision, roughly 36 km by the official sightseeing list; Wikipedia places it about 30 km east of Dhubri and 10 km west of Bilasipara. Hire a car with a driver and leave in the morning.

Visit the main shrine first, then ask a local about the Snaanghat temple on the bank of the Tipkai river, a few kilometres away. According to local belief the goddess bathed there. The priests hold a Shakti Yagya at the ghat each January.

The temple is busiest at Durga Puja, when the long-standing tradition of animal sacrifice is observed. Not everyone is comfortable with this, and animal welfare groups have criticised it. If you want a calm darshan, choose a weekday outside festival time. Dress modestly and carry little.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Dress modestly and be ready to remove footwear
  • Avoid Durga Puja unless you want crowds
  • Confirm travel time from Kokrajhar with your driver
  • Ask locally about the Snaanghat
  • Carry cash for offerings
