Lingana Fort, Kolad: History, highlights and visitor guide

A linga-shaped rock pinnacle on the main Sahyadri line between Raigad and Torna, with only traces of its grain store and cisterns left. It is a technical climb, not a casual visit.

The short answer

Lingana Fort: what visitors should know first

Lingana is for experienced trekkers or climbers who go with a guide, not for family outings. Most visitors from Kolad should admire it from Raigad's side or choose Ghosalgad or Talagad instead.

History and context

The story behind Lingana Fort

Wikipedia, citing the 1883 Bombay Presidency Gazetteer, says Shivaji built the fort in 1648 to protect central Konkan from the Sidis. Under the Marathas it served as a penal settlement, with prisoners held in rock dungeons, one said to hold 50.

Colonel Prother captured it in 1818. The Wikipedia article rests on a single old source, so details may be incomplete.

Why it matters

Why Lingana Fort is worth your time

Lingana is one of the most striking natural fort sites in the Raigad range, a pinnacle whose shape gives it its name. Its location between Raigad and Torna put it on the line of hill forts that guarded the approach to the Konkan.

For most Kolad visitors it matters as context: it explains why the forts around Raigad were built where they were, and it shows how demanding the unmodified Sahyadri ridge is compared with the gentler forts near Roha.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat Lingana as a trekker's objective rather than a sightseeing stop. The Gazetteer-based account in Wikipedia describes an ascent of roughly four miles, with an easy first half and a difficult second half, and says the fort is almost completely inaccessible since its rock-cut steps were destroyed.

Trekking organisers present Lingana as part of the longer Torna to Raigad route, including a technical climb and a rappel. Join such a group, or hire a local guide from the Mahad side, and do not attempt the pinnacle unroped without experience.

There is little to see on top beyond traces of a grain store, some cisterns and wide Sahyadri views. The reward is the position and the climb itself. Go in the cooler months, carry water and food for a full day, and avoid the monsoon.
