Kolad is a village in Raigad district on the banks of the Kundalika River, about 117 km from Mumbai on the old Mumbai-Goa highway. It is not a town with grand monuments. People come for a weekend of rafting in the monsoon, for a night at a riverside resort, and for the green hills and waterfalls of the Sahyadri edge above it.

The river is the key to the place. Excess water from Tata Power's hydro chain at Bhira is released upstream, reaching Kolad in the late morning, which is why rafting slots follow a rhythm. In the rains the Kundalika runs fuller and the rapids are livelier; at other times the run depends on releases, so it pays to check before you travel.

Beyond the river, the surrounding landscape is full of small hill forts such as Talagad, Ghosalgad and Avchitgad near Roha, the ancient Kuda caves towards the coast, and the Tamhini Ghat road climbing towards Pune. Most are short drives from Kolad, and several are gentle enough for older visitors.

Kolad suits short breaks of one or two nights, especially from Mumbai and Pune. It is best from October to February for forts and drives, and from June to September if you want the monsoon river, with the caveat that monsoon access to treks such as Devkund has been restricted in recent years.

What and where to eat in Kolad.

Food to try in Kolad

Food and restaurants

Kolad's food is simple and local: Maharashtrian thalis, fish curry and rice at roadside eateries and resort kitchens, plus vada pav and misal for breakfast. Raigad sits on the Konkan side, so expect coconut-based curries, rice bhakri and sol kadhi, the pink kokum-and-coconut drink served after meals. On rafting mornings, eat something light beforehand and keep a proper meal for afterwards. Most visitors eat at their resort, so ask about vegetarian options and spice levels when booking.

Shopping in Kolad

Shopping

There is little to shop for in Kolad itself. Riverside farms grow mangoes and watermelons, so seasonal fruit from roadside stalls is the main local buy. Roha and Mangaon have more regular markets for essentials; for crafts or gifts, plan to buy them elsewhere on your route.

Choose without overthinking

Which Kolad experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Rafting or forts, if you only have one day?

Pick rafting if you are fit, travelling in the monsoon and want a more active day. Pick Ghosalgad and Talagad if you are travelling with older family members or outside the monsoon, since the walks are short and the views reward a slow pace.

Ghosalgad or Talagad?

Ghosalgad has the shorter approach, about 15 minutes, and suits tired legs. Talagad takes about 45 minutes but has a longer ridge and cisterns; doing both works for fit walkers.

Devkund or Tamhini Ghat?

Devkund is a demanding trek with monsoon closures, so choose it only after the rains. Tamhini Ghat is a drive with viewpoints and suits all ages, though visibility drops in heavy rain.

Avchitgad or Sudhagad for a bigger fort day?

Avchitgad is closer to Roha and takes about an hour by the Medha route; Sudhagad is a larger fort with a one-to-two-hour climb and a long drive, so it needs a full day.

Know before you go

Kolad travel tips

  1. 01

    Dam release

Rafting depends on water released upstream, reaching Kolad in the late morning. Confirm the day's release with your operator.

  2. 02

    Monsoon closures

Devkund has been closed to the public in recent years during the monsoon. Check current orders before planning trek trips.

  3. 03

    Heat and humidity

April and May are hot and humid; plan walks for the first hours after sunrise.

  4. 04

    Getting around

A private car or driver is easiest. MSRTC buses run to Roha and Mangaon, but forts and trailheads need your own transport.

  5. 05

    Footwear

Wear grip shoes for forts and river shoes for rafting; stones and banks are slippery.

  6. 06

    Trains

Only a few trains halt at Kolad each day, so confirm timetables or use Roha station.

  7. 07

    Wildlife

Forest areas around Avchitgad have leopards and monkeys; keep to paths and avoid walking at dusk.

  8. 08

    Money and signal

Carry cash for small eateries and tips as card and mobile coverage can be patchy in forest areas.

Kolad with elderly parents: what to know

  • Choose gentle forts first: Ghosalgad has a short approach of about 15 minutes, whereas Avchitgad and Sudhagad are tougher.
  • Skip rafting if anyone has heart, breathing or mobility concerns; operators often set an upper age of 60 to 65.

About 117 km from Mumbai per Wikipedia, and linked to Pune by a state highway; the Pune route runs via the Tamhini Ghat or Mulshi.

Does rafting run all year?

It depends on dam releases and flow; the monsoon is the surest season. Confirm with the operator before you travel.

How do I reach Kolad by train?

Kolad (KOL) is on the Konkan Railway, but only a few trains halt there. Roha station is about 13 km away with more services.
