The short answer
Sudhagad Fort: what visitors should know first
Go if you want a proper fort day and can handle a climb of one to two hours. The summit is spacious and the views are wide, but there is no water on the way up and it is too much for many older walkers.
History and context
The story behind Sudhagad Fort
Wikipedia says the fort may date to the 2nd century BC (flagged as needing a source) and was first called Bhorapgad after the goddess Bhoraidevi. The Bahamani Sultan captured it in 1436, and the Marathas took it in 1657 and renamed it Sudhagad. Under the Peshwas the Pantsachivs of Bhor were its custodians. After princely states were annexed in 1950 the fort lost its patronage and is now in ruins.

Why it matters
Why Sudhagad Fort is worth your time
Sudhagad is one of Raigad's larger forts and has a role in Maratha history: Wikipedia says Shivaji considered it for his capital but chose Raigad for its central location. Its summit plateau is large enough to host a garrison and a settlement.
The Bhoraidevi temple suggests the fort's older name, Bhorapgad, and the Pantsachiv family of Bhor held it under the Peshwas. It is also a useful benchmark: if Ghosalgad felt like a stroll, Sudhagad shows what a full Sahyadri fort day involves, with a long approach, big views and a summit with enough ruins to fill a morning.

How to experience it
Sudhagad sits a little way from Kolad, near Pali, so treat it as a separate day rather than an add-on. Wikipedia says the most popular route starts from Thakurwadi and takes about one to two hours; there are no water cisterns along the way, so carry plenty.
On the plateau, look for the large Maha Darwaja and the two other main gates, the well-maintained Bhoraidevi temple, ruins of two Shiva temples, a granary, tombs and two lakes. The summit is broad enough to wander for an hour or more, with views of Sarasgad, Korigad, Ghangad and Taila-Baila.
Start early, wear grip shoes and sun protection, and plan to be down before the afternoon heat. If anyone in your group has limited stamina, choose Ghosalgad instead.
