Why it matters
Why Kopeshwar Temple, Khidrapur is worth your time
The temple shows the artistic level reached under the Shilahara rulers of the Kolhapur area in the twelfth century. They were Jains by faith but built and renovated Hindu temples, and Kopeshwar is one of their major surviving works.
Its significance lies in its detail and calm. Few temples in Maharashtra have an open-roofed hall like this, and the presence of a Vishnu image in a Shiva temple is noted by scholars as unusual. For travellers with an interest in Indian temple architecture, it repays the drive.

How to experience it
Reach in the morning, before the stone heats up. Walk around the outside first to see the elephant figures at the base and the carved panels on the walls. The temple is divided into four parts, from the open Swargamandapa to the inner sanctum.
The Swargamandapa is the highlight. Its roof is open to the sky through a circular opening, held up on dozens of pillars carved by hand. Look up and then at the pillars, each different. Beyond it lies the Sabhamandapa and the sanctum, where a Shiva linga and a Vishnu image (Dhopeshwar) are both worshipped, which is unusual in a Shiva temple.
The visit is quiet. Take time for the carvings, then return the same day or pair the outing with another stop, as the route is long.
