History and context
The story behind Panhala Fort
Panhala Fort was built between 1178 and 1209 under the Shilahara ruler Bhoja II. The Bijapur sultanate took it in 1489 and fortified it further. Shivaji captured it in 1659 after the death of Afzal Khan, and endured the siege by Siddi Johar from May 1660, escaping on 13 July 1660. He took it permanently in 1673.
Tarabai lived here for nearly five years after 1693, administering the fort.

Why it matters
Why Panhala Fort is worth your time
Panhala is bound up with the story of Shivaji. In 1660 he was besieged here by Siddi Johar and escaped at night to Vishalgad, an episode told in Maharashtra's folk history. The fort later became a seat of the Kolhapur branch, and Tarabai ruled from here for several years after 1693.
For a modern visitor it is a clear lesson in how Deccan forts were designed. The granaries, wells and gates were built for long sieges, and the fort's position high above the plain shows why control of it mattered for the region. It is also a pleasant escape from the city heat.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Drive up in the morning and begin at the Teen Darwaza, the main northern gateway, which has ornate Persian inscriptions. It shows the Bijapur-era work on the fort. From there walk to the Ambarkhana, a trio of granaries that allowed the garrison to withstand long sieges.
The Andhar Bavdi, a hidden three-storey well that protected the fort's water supply, is the most interesting structure. Take a torch and mind the steps. Sajja Kothi, a pavilion from around 1500, has views over the valley. Allow time for the walls, which run for several kilometres, and for tea at the village.
Go back to Kolhapur by early afternoon. In the monsoon the hills are green but the steps are slippery; in summer the stone heats quickly. A local guide can help with the history, but agree on their rate in advance.
