Why it matters
Why Jatayu Earth's Center is worth your time
Jatayu Earth's Center combines a large artwork with a mythic place. In the Ramayana, Jatayu, a vulture-like demi-god, tried to stop Ravana and fell wounded at Chadayamangalam, where he told Rama and Lakshmana which way Ravana had gone. The park gives that legend a physical form.
Beyond the legend, the site shows how Kerala is investing in large-scale tourism projects. It is a good contrast to the quiet lake and temple visits elsewhere in Kollam, and a useful excursion if you have a car.

How to experience it
Go early. The park sits at around 350 m on a rock outcrop, and the heat builds quickly. The sculpture is the main attraction, described as the world's largest bird sculpture, about 61 m long, 46 m wide and 21 m high, and made of concrete and steel by artist Rajiv Anchal.
You can reach the top by the cable car, a separate ticket, or by climbing 826 steps. Most older visitors should take the cable car. At the top you can see the sculpture, a museum and views over the Kollam district. Allow time for queues, especially on weekends.
The park is built around the Ramayana legend, in which Jatayu tried to stop Ravana from abducting Sita and fell at this place. Visitors of all faiths come for the spectacle.
