How to experience it
Thenmala is a hill tourism area on the eastern side of Kollam district, around 14 km from the Tamil Nadu border. It is described as India's first planned ecotourism destination. The attractions include a lake created by the Parappar Dam within the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary, boating, a rope bridge, trekking, biking and a musical fountain.
Plan a day with two or three activities. The butterfly safari park, established in 2001, houses about 125 butterfly species. Other nearby sights include a deer rehabilitation centre and a traditional tree house. Palaruvi Falls is also in this direction, making a natural pairing.
The drive from Kollam takes more than an hour, so start early. The hill air is cooler than the coast, but humidity can be high.
