How to experience it
Sasthamkotta is a freshwater lake, the largest in Kerala, and a lifeline for the district: it supplies drinking water to around half a million people in the Kollam area. It was designated a Ramsar wetland in 2002 and is named after the ancient Sastha temple on its bank.
Go in the morning or evening, when it is cooler. Walk along the shore, take in the water and shoreline and, if you wish, visit the temple. The setting is very different from the salty lake near Kollam and is a good contrast.
There is little tourist infrastructure, so pack water and snacks, and treat it as a quiet stop on a longer drive rather than a destination in its own right.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
