Why it matters

Why Sigandur Chowdeshwari Temple is worth your time

Sigandur shows how reservoirs have reshaped pilgrim geography in the Ghats: a village that became an island of sorts, with a shrine whose popularity grew with the ferry and, later, road access. It gives a broader picture of the region's folk goddess worship alongside Kollur.

For a visitor based at Kollur, the trip also explains how the landscape works: the Sharavathi backwaters split communities that once shared a road, and the pilgrim traffic now keeps the crossing busy. It suits devotees of folk goddess worship more than sightseers, and it is best done on a quiet weekday.

How to experience it

Sigandur lies on the Sharavathi backwaters of Linganamakki reservoir and was cut off from Sagara by the water, so it was long reached by barge. The only road route runs via Kollur and Nagodi. Check current arrangements for vehicles and passengers before you set out, since crossing details have changed over time.

The temple of Chowdeshwari, also called Sigandureshwari, dates to around the 18th century and is believed by devotees to protect against theft. Lord Veerabhadra guards the shrine and Shani and Raktheshwari shrines stand nearby. Hundreds of visitors arrive daily.

Treat it as an outing from Kollur rather than a stop on the way. Ashada month in June to July brings very large crowds and has seen stampedes, so choose another time.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Check the crossing and road status first
  • Avoid Ashada month
