The short answer

Kodachadri: what visitors should know first

Go if you are fit or happy to take a hired jeep, and only in dry months. The summit track is rough, tented camping is banned, and the Chitramoola cave path is closed. It is a good day out, but not a casual stroll.

History and context

The story behind Kodachadri

Local tradition holds that Adi Shankara meditated on the hill and then established the temple at Kollur. A nearly 40-foot iron pillar in front of the hilltop shrine is said by devotees to be the goddess's trident; tests are reported to show it to be nearly pure iron that resists corrosion.

Why it matters

Why Kodachadri is worth your time

Kodachadri sits at the heart of the Mookambika story. Tradition says Adi Shankara meditated here before establishing the goddess at Kollur, and the hilltop shrine is where local belief places the goddess's victory over Mookasura. For many pilgrims, a visit to the temple is not complete without a trip up the hill.

It is also the highest peak in Shivamogga district and is recognised as a natural heritage site by the state government, with Western Ghats shola forest, grassland and rare plants on the way up. The combination of faith and landscape is the reason it is worth the bumpy ride.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Most visitors take a hired jeep from Kollur. Drivers know the track, which is rough and only partly paved; do not attempt it on a motorcycle. The checkpost at the foothills is run by the Forest Department, and liquor is confiscated there.

At the top, a path leads to Sarvajna Peetha, a small stone shrine associated with Adi Shankara's meditation. A short distance below stands the hilltop Mookambika shrine, with a tall iron pillar in front that devotees take to be the goddess's trident. Views stretch across the ridges to the Arabian Sea on clear days. Go for sunrise or late afternoon when the light is softer.

Trekkers can climb from Nagodi or Nittur, a long 20 to 22 km route rated moderate to difficult. The path to the Chitramoola cave is closed, so pilgrims go only as far as Sarvajna Peetha. Carry water, since there are few shops at the top.

Plan with confidence
