The short answer
Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first
Go if you want forest rather than ritual: the sanctuary surrounds Kollur, so you are already in it. Treat it as a day of guided trails to Arasinagundi or Kodachadri, check access with the forest office first, and do not expect a conventional safari with fixed rides and published fees.
History and context
The story behind Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary
The sanctuary was notified in 1974 at about 274 sq km by the Government of Karnataka, and later notifications expanded it to roughly 370 sq km. It takes its name from the goddess of the Kollur temple, and the Souparnika and Chakra rivers run through it.

Why it matters
Why Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Notified in 1974 at about 274 sq km and later enlarged to about 370 sq km, the sanctuary protects a stretch of the Western Ghats where the Chakra and Souparnika rivers rise. The same landscape holds the Kollur temple and the Kodachadri hills, which is why people and wildlife share it so closely.
The forest holds tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen stands, moist deciduous woodland and some grassland on the higher slopes. Recorded species include tiger, leopard, dhole, sloth bear, gaur, sambar, lion-tailed macaque, giant flying squirrel, king cobra and the great hornbill. Few of these are seen on a casual visit, but the habitat is what keeps the rivers, falls and rain regime around Kollur intact.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
Souparnika and Chakra rivers
Both perennial rivers rise or run through the forest, feeding the falls near Kollur.
- 02
Birds and butterflies
Hornbills and many forest birds can be seen at dawn; the forest-edge camps run butterfly walks in season.
- 03
Kodachadri slopes
The mountain forests above Kollur are the sanctuary's most scenic trail country.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
The sanctuary is not a single gate and a safari circuit. Kollur village and its temple sit inside the protected area, and the forest begins within a short distance of the road. Visitors typically use it in three ways: a guided walk to Arasinagundi Falls, a jeep climb to Kodachadri, or a stay at a forest-edge camp where staff can suggest bird and butterfly walks.
Ask locally for a guide before any trek. Tracks are unmarked in places, leeches are common in the rains and mobile coverage is patchy. Early morning is the best time for birds; midday is quiet. Carry water, wear closed shoes and leave nothing behind. Tented camping and campfires have been banned on the Kodachadri side since 2015, and liquor is confiscated at the checkpost.
Do not plan around seeing tigers or leopards. They live here, but sightings are rare. What you can count on is dense canopy, running water, hornbills and the sense of being in intact Ghats forest a few kilometres from a busy temple town.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Ask the forest office or your stay about permission before any trek
- Hire a local guide for Arasinagundi or Kodachadri
- Carry water, a rain jacket and closed shoes
- Do not expect fixed safari timings or published fees
Know before you go
Timing, access and comfort
- Area
- Surrounds Kollur and the Kodachadri range, Byndoor taluk, Udupi district
- Time needed
- Half a day for a forest trail; a full day with Kodachadri
- Best time
- October to February for walking; July to September for waterfalls, with harder trails
- Walking level
- Moderate
- Senior comfort
- There is no easy-access viewing platform. Forest trails are uneven, slippery in the rains and mostly unshaded benches are absent, so older visitors are better off with a short guided walk or a vehicle drive on the main road rather than a trek.
- Tickets and access
- Fees, permits and entry points are not published in one place and vary by trail. Enquire with the Forest Department or your stay before heading in; forest checkposts operate on the Kodachadri side.
