Plan 01

1 day in Konark

  1. 01

Day 1: The Sun Temple and coast

Arrive early morning and head to the Sun Temple with a local guide (essential for understanding the carvings and navigating the uneven levels). Allow about two hours inside, including a rest at the shaded areas. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant near the temple. In the late afternoon, drive to Chandrabhaga Beach to watch the light soften over the water and walk along the sand if the tide allows. If energy remains, a brief visit to the small Konark Museum (near the temple) covers the sculpture finds.

Plan 02

2 days in Konark

  1. 01

    Day 1: The Sun Temple

Begin early at the Sun Temple, arriving when the gates open. Take a guide and spend two to three hours exploring the chariot wheel carvings, the stone horses and the intricate sculptures on the walls. Sit in the shaded areas and let the scale sink in. Have a long lunch back in town, then visit the Konark Museum to see the detached sculpture fragments and understand the temple's building techniques. In the late afternoon, watch the light change at the temple's outer walls.

  2. 02

Day 2: Beach and Wildlife Sanctuary

Visit Chandrabhaga Beach at dawn or early morning (about 3 kilometres from the temple) to see the tide and light at their best. Walk along the sand and look for shells. Return for a midday meal and rest. In the late afternoon, visit the Balukhand-Konark Wildlife Sanctuary (entrance roughly 8–10 kilometres inland) if a jeep safari is available; otherwise, walk the quieter trails to look for migratory birds and spotted deer. Late afternoon and evening are best for wildlife spotting.

Plan 03

3 days in Konark

  1. 01

Day 1: The Sun Temple, slow

Spend a full morning at the Sun Temple with a guide, arriving at opening time. Explore all three levels, rest often and study the carvings carefully. Have a leisurely lunch. Visit the Konark Museum in the afternoon. In the evening, sit outside the temple as the light turns golden to see the stone change colour.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Coast and sanctuary

Start at Chandrabhaga Beach at dawn. Spend the morning walking the shoreline, watching for birds and shells. Return for a late breakfast or early lunch. In the afternoon, visit the Balukhand-Konark Wildlife Sanctuary for a jeep safari or guided walk. The dry grassland and scrubby forest are home to spotted deer and migratory waterbirds; peak season for birds is October to February.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Puri day trip

Drive to Puri (roughly 35 kilometres, 45–60 minutes by road) to visit the Jagannath Temple and walk the Puri Beach. Puri is busier and more touristy than Konark but offers temples, seafood markets and a busy sea-facing promenade. Return to Konark in the evening or stay overnight in Puri for its different character.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • There is almost no shade at the Sun Temple: The temple platform is open stone with very little tree cover. Carry a hat, sunscreen and water even in the cooler months, and plan an early visit rather than a midday one, particularly from March to June.
  • The temple's stone steps and plinths are uneven: Surfaces are original, centuries-old sandstone and khondalite, not evenly finished paving. Wear closed shoes with grip, take a walking stick if you use one at home, and move slowly between levels.
  • Hire a car and driver rather than relying on autos: Konark's sights, the beach, Ramachandi Temple, Kuruma and the wildlife sanctuary, are spread out with limited public transport between them. A private car for the day is the practical way to see more than the temple alone.
  • Konark has very few restaurants: Most visitors eat at their hotel or one of a handful of simple establishments near the temple. If you have specific dietary needs, mention them when booking accommodation so the kitchen can plan ahead.
  • Dress modestly at Ramachandi Temple and other shrines: These are working places of worship, not just monuments. Cover shoulders and knees, and ask before photographing the deity or the sanctum directly.
  • Confirm opening days before visiting the museum: The Archaeological Museum near the Sun Temple typically closes one day a week. Check the current closure day locally so it does not derail a tightly planned morning.
