The short answer
Best areas to stay in Konark
- 01
Near the Sun Temple
Best for: Temple-focused visits and walking to nearby sights
A handful of budget and mid-range hotels sit within a few hundred metres of the temple entrance. Noisy in season but convenient. Rooms can be basic; check online reviews for cleanliness and water supply.
- 02
Chandrabhaga Beach area
Best for: Sunrise at the beach and quieter mornings
A few small guesthouses and resorts face the beach, 3 kilometres from the temple. More peaceful than the temple area, but fewer dining options nearby. Vehicle access is essential.
- 03
Town centre
Best for: Restaurants and local markets
The small commercial area has a few mid-range hotels and better food options than the temple area. About 2–3 kilometres from the temple, a 5–10 minute drive.
- 04
Puri as a base
Best for: Variety, comfort and day-tripping to Konark
Many travellers stay in Puri (30–40 minutes away) and visit Konark as a day trip. Puri has far more hotels, restaurants and night life. Good if you want Konark as an excursion within a larger Odisha loop.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Konark
- The Sun Temple has steep, uneven steps and three levels. Wear sturdy shoes with grip, use a walking stick if needed, and take your time. A good guide is not optional; they can show you the least strenuous routes and help you rest safely.
- Visit the temple early, before 10 a.m., when it is cooler and less crowded. The afternoon heat and glare reflect harshly off the stone.
- Bring a hat, water bottle and sunscreen. There is little shade on the temple grounds; rest under the few covered porticos or in your car.
- Chandrabhaga Beach is level and easy; a leisurely walk here is a gentler morning or evening activity after the temple.
