Plan 01

1 day in Kota

  1. 01

Day 1: Palace, museums and a lakeside evening

Start at Garh Palace when it opens and give the Rao Madho Singh Museum about two hours, taking the courtyards and royal apartments slowly. Move on to the Government Museum in Brij Vilas, which is cool and quiet, then have an early lunch and rest. In the late afternoon walk the Chhatra Vilas gardens to see the Kshar Bagh cenotaphs and the edge of Kishore Sagar, and take a boat or simply look at Jag Mandir as the light drops. If you have energy left, drive to Chambal Garden or the Seven Wonders Park for the evening, and finish with a plate of kachori the next morning if you stay over.

Garh Palace (Kota Garh)2–3 hoursModerateMorning on opening, October to March
Chambal Garden1–2 hoursEasyLate afternoon, October to March
Seven Wonders Park1–1.5 hoursEasyEvening, October to March

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Garh Palace (Kota Garh): The palace has gateways, courtyards and several staircases, with uneven stone underfoot and limited seating in places. The ground-floor museum is the easiest part; the upper apartments are steeper. Go early, wear flat shoes and take rest breaks in the shaded courtyards.

Visit Mathuradhish Temple if you would like to see evening darshan, checking the darshan times locally.

Day 2: River, gorge and handloom

Drive out early to Garadia Mahadev for the view over the Chambal gorge before the heat builds. Come back via the Kota Barrage area and Chambal Garden, then lunch. In the afternoon, either visit Kaithoon to watch Kota Doria being woven or see Abheda Mahal and its lake. End with the Seven Wonders Park once the evening cools.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Kota trip for parents and children

  • Do your sightseeing between November and February if you can. From April to June, restrict outdoor visits to the first two hours after sunrise.
  • Garh Palace has stairs and uneven stone in places; go early, ask about the easier route to the museum, and take rest breaks in the courtyards.
  • The Government Museum in Brij Vilas, Chambal Garden and the Seven Wonders Park are the gentlest sights. Garadia Mahadev involves a descent and steps, so judge it on the day.
  • Hire a car and driver for the whole day when visiting Kaithoon, Garadia Mahadev or wildlife areas. Public transport out of town is limited.
  • Choose a hotel with a lift and a car drop-off near the door; many older heritage buildings have steps.
  • Carry water, a hat and any regular medication, and plan a rest after lunch. Afternoons are the hardest part of the day in every season except winter.
