How to reach Kotagiri by air
Coimbatore International Airport (CJB) is the nearest airport, roughly 65 km from Kotagiri by road. Allow a long half-day for the transfer, which includes the ghat road, and book a taxi in advance.
How to reach Kotagiri by train
Mettupalayam (MTP) is the nearest railway station, at the foot of the hills. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs from there to Coonoor and Ooty, but it does not serve Kotagiri, so you finish the journey by road.
How to reach Kotagiri by road
Kotagiri is about 30 km from Ooty and well connected by road to Coonoor and Mettupalayam. Buses and shared jeeps link the town to Coimbatore and the other hill stations; roads are winding, so avoid night driving where possible.
Getting around Kotagiri
Autos and taxis work in town and for short trips. For Kodanad View Point, Rangaswamy Peak and the waterfalls, a car with driver for the day is the most practical option.
For parents and senior travellers
Easy transfers to and in Kotagiri
- Hire a car with driver for Kodanad, Rangaswamy Peak and the falls. Distances look short on a map, but the roads are winding.
- Keep to main roads when walking around the estates; estate dogs have been reported as aggressive, so avoid early-morning solo walks away from roads.
- Carry a light waterproof and a warm layer even in dry months, and bring enough of any regular medicines for the whole stay.
- Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
- Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
- Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
