Plan 01

1 day in Kotagiri

  1. 01

Day 1: Viewpoint, memorial and a tea-estate lane

Leave early for Kodanad View Point, which is the clearest in the first hours of the morning, and look across to Rangaswamy Peak and the Moyar gorge. Drive back through the estates and stop at the Sullivan Memorial at Kannerimukku for an hour. After lunch in town and a rest, walk a short, level stretch of an estate road or the town bazaar for tea and a bakery stop, and finish at Nehru Park if the weather is clear.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Kodanad View PointAbout 1 to 1.5 hours at the viewpoint, plus the driveEasyEarly morning, especially from December to February, when haze is least
Nehru Park30 to 60 minutesEasyAfternoons and early evenings in dry weather

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 02

2 days in Kotagiri

  1. 01

Day 1: Kodanad and the memorial

Start at Kodanad View Point as early as you can and spend an hour or more on the upper deck. Return via Sullivan Memorial at Kannerimukku, then have a late lunch and rest. Spend the evening in town at the bazaar with tea and a bakery stop.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Forest and falls

Take a guided or at least well-informed morning at Longwood Shola on the edge of town, checking access with local forest staff. In the afternoon, if it has rained recently, drive out to Elk Falls near Uyilatty and walk in only as far as you are comfortable. Keep the evening for Nehru Park or a slow tea-estate lane.

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Elk Falls (Uyilatty Falls): The walk passes through villages and plantation land, and paths can be slippery after rain. Older visitors or those with limited balance should consider going only as far as is comfortable and skipping the final approach.

Plan 03

3 days in Kotagiri

  1. 01

Day 1: Arrive and settle in

Reach Kotagiri by midday, rest, and take a short walk on a tea-estate road or in the bazaar late in the afternoon. Notice the early evening chill and plan layers.

  2. 02

Day 2: Kodanad, Rangaswamy and the memorial

Go to Kodanad View Point at opening time for the gorge views and the distant Rangaswamy Peak. Ask locally before planning any approach to the peak itself, since it is a sacred site. Return via Sullivan Memorial at Kannerimukku and rest in the afternoon.

  3. 03

Day 3: Shola, falls and a tea-country morning

Visit Longwood Shola in the morning, then drive to Elk Falls near Uyilatty if recent rain makes it worthwhile. If you still have energy, add a day trip to Catherine Falls by the Mettupalayam road on your way out.

Pacing

Pacing a Kotagiri trip for parents and children

  • Do Kodanad View Point early in the morning, when it is clearest, and use the lower deck if the upper steps are tiring.
  • Choose a stay with a level approach and a warm room: nights are cool all year and the damp is noticeable in the monsoon.
  • Hire a car with driver for Kodanad, Rangaswamy Peak and the falls. Distances look short on a map, but the roads are winding.
  • Treat the waterfalls and Longwood Shola as optional. Paths are uneven and slippery after rain; stay on the main routes and go with someone who knows them.
  • Keep to main roads when walking around the estates; estate dogs have been reported as aggressive, so avoid early-morning solo walks away from roads.
  • Carry a light waterproof and a warm layer even in dry months, and bring enough of any regular medicines for the whole stay.
