Why it matters

Why Shivsagar Lake and Bamnoli Boating is worth your time

Shivsagar Lake is the water behind Koyna Dam and one of the largest reservoirs in Maharashtra, stretching more than 50 kilometres. Its shape is what gives the sanctuary its character: a drowned valley with forest rising from the water and fort-topped ridges beyond.

It is also why access to Koyna's forests is by boat. The lake serves both visitors and the villages along its edge, and a few hours on it explains how people, power and wildlife share this valley.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Boating is the way the lake reveals itself. At Bamnoli, village boats take groups out on the backwaters for short rides, and the same boats serve as transport to the Met Indavli landing for Vasota. At Tapola, near the Mahabaleshwar side, there are public boat slots of about thirty minutes or an hour. The reservoir is long, with forest hanging over most shores.

Birds are the usual reward: river terns, wagtails, kingfishers and cormorants work the shallows, especially after the monsoon when the water is high. The lake changes with the season: full and green in winter, retreating and rocky by summer, when the landing points shift and boats may stop further out.

Choose a morning ride for calm water and light haze. Some operators offer houseboat stays, lakeside camping or kayaking; these change often, so check current availability and safety arrangements directly.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Wear a life jacket and avoid standing in the boat
  • Agree price and route before boarding
  • Take a hat and water; there is little shade
  • Check the water level; summer landings can be far from the shore
