Ao Nang
Best for: First-time visitors, families and seniors who want restaurants, clinics and boat departures close by
Good to know: The main resort base, with hotels for most budgets, Indian and vegetarian restaurants and longtail departures. The trade-offs are a busy main street and a modest beach. Choose a hotel a few streets back for less noise.
Sights in this area: Ao Nang, Hong Islands (Ko Hong) day trip, Poda and Chicken Island boat trip, Railay Beach
- 02
Railay
Best for: Travellers who want quiet evenings and easy access to Phra Nang and the cliffs
Good to know: No road access, so every transfer involves a boat and often wading. Excellent scenery, but harder for luggage, limited mobility and late arrivals. Check the tide and last boat times.
Sights in this area: Phra Nang Beach and Cave, Railay Beach
- 03
Krabi Town
Best for: Budget stays, the airport and the weekend night market
Good to know: A small riverside town about 7 km from the airport, with Wat Kaew Korawaram and the weekend night market. Far from the beaches, so most visitors use it for a day or a night, not the whole trip.
Sights in this area: Ao Nang, Emerald Pool (Sa Morakot), Khao Phanom Bencha and Huai To Falls, Railay Beach, Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea), Wat Kaew Korawaram
- 04
Klong Muang and other quieter beaches
Best for: Resort stays with a calmer feel
Good to know: Quieter beaches near the airport side of the coast, with larger resorts. You will rely more on hotel shuttles and taxis for food and tours.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
