The short answer
Kudremukh Peak Trek: what visitors should know first
Go only if you are fit, can walk most of a day and have a booked slot. The route is long, shadeless in places and ends with a descent you must finish before dark. Book through the Karnataka Forest Department portal and check the weather and trail status first.
History and context
The story behind Kudremukh Peak Trek
The peak sits inside Kudremukh National Park, which was formed in 1987 from reserved forest that dated from the British period. The iron ore mine that supplied the township closed after its lease lapsed in 1999.
The trek is among the routes the forest department manages through its online booking system.

Why it matters
Why Kudremukh Peak Trek is worth your time
Kudremukh is one of the better-known high points of the Western Ghats in Karnataka. Karnataka Tourism describes it as the second highest peak in the state after Mullayyanagiri, and the name means 'horse face' because of the profile the peak shows from certain angles.
The trek matters because it lets you see the shola grassland and forest mosaic that holds water for the Tunga, Bhadra and Netravathi rivers. The park around it was declared in 1987 after campaigning against the mining that once defined the area, so walking here is also a way of seeing what was protected. It rewards preparation more than speed.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
The grass ridges
Open shola slopes give wide views over layered ridges once you clear the forest.
- 02
The horse-face profile
The summit shape that gave the peak its name is clearest from the approach.
- 03
Source-rivers country
This high ground feeds the Tunga, Bhadra and Netravathi rivers.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Book a slot on the official portal and arrive at the start point early, as the portal notice asks trekkers to report at least ten minutes before their slot. The trail climbs through forest and then opens onto rolling grassland ridges. Pace yourself on the way up, because the descent takes longer than people expect and you must be out before sunset.
Carry water in a refillable bottle, a rain jacket, sun protection and snacks. Plastic bottles and wrappers are reported to be checked at forest checkpoints, and anything you carry up must come back down. There are toilets at the base camp but none beyond the check post, so use them before you set off.
Weather decides the day. In clear weather the views across the ridge towards the sea are the reward, but cloud can roll in quickly and the grass is slippery after rain. If the forest department suspends trekking after heavy rain, as it did in August 2026, accept the refund and come back in a better season.
