Kudremukh travel guide

A horse-faced Western Ghats peak, shola grassland, source rivers and a quiet pilgrimage belt at Kalasa and Horanadu: slow, green and best after the rains.

Kudremukh takes its name from Kannada for 'horse face', after the profile of its main summit, which rises to about 1,892 m in the Western Ghats. The small town sits at roughly 815 m, in Kalasa taluk of Chikmagalur district, and was built as a company township for the iron ore mine that worked here for decades. The mine is gone, the township has shrunk, and what remains is the hills: a national park of about 600 sq km, declared in 1987, covering wet evergreen forest and open shola grassland where the Tunga, Bhadra and Netravathi rivers are said to rise.

This is a destination for walking and looking rather than ticking off monuments. The headline experience is the Kudremukh Peak trek, a long day on open grass ridges that needs advance booking through the Karnataka Forest Department's online portal and is not for everyone. For the rest of the family there are waterfalls such as Hanumana Gundi and Kadambi, which are at their best after the monsoon, plus the Bhagavathi shrine at Ganga Moola where the three rivers begin.

The gentler half of a trip lies a short drive away at Kalasa and Horanadu. Kalasa has the Kalaseshwara Shiva temple on the Bhadra river and a Jain basadi, and Horanadu has the Annapoorneshwari temple, well known for its free meals. Together they make an easy day for parents who will not be trekking.

Plan around the weather. The Ghats here get several metres of rain between June and September, trails can be closed, and roads and leeches make the monsoon hard going. Winter is cooler and clearer. Services are basic, towns are small, and Mangaluru is the practical gateway for flights and trains.

Kudremukh itinerary

One good day

1 day in Kudremukh

Start early from your base and drive to the Kudremukh National Park area. If you have a booked slot, walk the peak trail only as far as your fitness and the daylight allow; otherwise spend the morning at Kadambi Falls and, if road and water level are safe, Hanumana Gundi. Have an early lunch and rest. In the afternoon, drive to Kalasa for the Kalaseshwara temple, then continue to Horanadu if you still have energy. Return before dark, since the ghat roads are poorly lit and mist can settle quickly.

Day-by-day plan →

Two days

2 days in Kudremukh

Book a slot in advance on the Karnataka Forest Department's Aranya Vihaara portal and carry the original photo ID used for the booking. Reach the start point early, walk the long grassland route to the horse-face summit and be back down before sunset, as camping is not allowed. Eat a proper breakfast, carry water in a refillable container and expect a long, tiring day. Rest in the evening.

Three unhurried days

3 days in Kudremukh

Spend the morning at Kadambi Falls and the Bhagavathi shrine at Ganga Moola, where the Tunga, Bhadra and Netravathi are said to rise. Check access at the forest office first. Keep the afternoon free.

Food to try in Kudremukh

Food and restaurants

Food around Kudremukh is plain and local: rice meals, idli and dosa, plantation-country coffee and simple vegetarian fare at small hotels in Kalasa and Mudigere. There are few formal restaurants, so do not plan around a particular name.

Horanadu is the exception. The Annapoorneshwari temple serves meals to visitors, according to tourism sources, and nearby hotels serve vegetarian food. Carry water, snacks and fruit for trek days, as there is no food after the forest check post, and take your waste back with you.

Markets, makers and what to take home.

Shopping in Kudremukh

Shopping

There is little organised shopping in Kudremukh itself. In Kalasa and the plantation belt, look for locally grown coffee, pepper and cardamom from small shops, and check labels and freshness. Temple towns also sell devotional items near the entrances. Treat the area as a place to buy a few spices and coffee on the way out, not a shopping stop.

Hotels that shape the trip, not just the night.

Choose without overthinking

Which Kudremukh experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Kudremukh Peak trek or waterfalls and temples?

Pick the trek if you are fit, can start early and are comfortable with a long day on open grassland. Pick falls and temples if you have older travellers or limited time; Kalasa, Horanadu and short falls visits need far less effort.

Kalasa or Horanadu for a temple stop?

Kalasa has the Kalaseshwara Shiva temple on the Bhadra river and a Jain basadi, and suits a short, quiet visit. Horanadu has the Annapoorneshwari temple with free meals and larger crowds, so pick it if you want the fuller pilgrimage experience.

October-November or January-February?

October and November give the greenest hills and fuller waterfalls, but some drizzle and leeches may linger. January and February are drier and clearer, but streams thin out and falls are weaker.

Base at Kalasa or in Kudremukh town?

Kalasa is easier for families, with temples and plantation scenery close. Kudremukh town suits trekkers who want an early start but has fewer facilities.

Kudremukh travel tips

  1. 01

    Book treks in advance

Trek slots are booked on the Karnataka Forest Department's Aranya Vihaara portal. A notice on the portal says bookings can be made up to 30 days ahead and that the original ID used must be shown on the day. Confirm current rules there.

  2. 02

    No camping

Karnataka Tourism says camping is not allowed in the park, so day trekkers must descend before sunset. Start early and carry a torch.

  3. 03

    Plastic and waste

Press reports on the forest department's rules mention a ban on plastic bottles, bags and packaging on trekking routes, with checks at checkpoints. Carry a refillable bottle and take all waste out.

  4. 04

    Monsoon closures

Trekking in the Kudremukh division was reported suspended in August 2026 because of heavy rain, with refunds for advance bookings. Check the portal before travelling in or near the monsoon.

  5. 05

    Getting around

Hire a car and driver for the trip. Roads are winding and mobile signal is patchy, so share your plan and download offline maps.

  6. 06

    Cold and rain

The hills are cool and misty even outside the monsoon. Carry a rain jacket, and shoes with grip.

  7. 07

    Temple dress

Dress modestly at Kalasa and Horanadu. Shorts are reported to be disallowed at Horanadu.

  8. 08

    Money

Cash machines and shops are limited near the park. Carry some cash and refill your fuel and snacks in Kalasa or Mudigere.

Kudremukh with elderly parents: what to know

  • The peak trek is long and not suitable for most older travellers. Give yourself the options of Kalasa, Horanadu and short waterfall visits instead.
  • Roads are winding ghat roads. If anyone gets car sick, stop often, travel in the morning and avoid driving after dark.
